You need 1.5 GB minimum free disk space. Partition size is not relevant, provided you have one with that much disk space available. Best practice on a drive that size is make a single 10 GB partition.

    What made you rate this less than a FixYa? Was there some part of your question that I did not answer?

If you will use NTFS only one primary active partition can do it. If you use FAT32 you still gonna need one primary active partition with less than 8gigbyte. And the rest is another partition.

Step of installing windows xp professional

Step 1. Basic Installation Start the computer and insert your windows xp cd. After a few seconds, the screen will clear and you will see a 'press any key to boot from CD' prompt. Press the any key..... he he, there is no 'any' key, this is just a test ;)
Press any key to start the install. The prompt allowing you to install will time out after about 4 seconds, so if you don't hit any of the keyboard keys you will have to reboot to install.
The installer program will begin copying files from the CD.

The 'welcome to setup' screen appears. Press enter to continue. View the licensing agreement and hit F8 to continue.
The installation program will then search your drives for any prior installation of XP. If it finds one, you will be given the option to repair it, which essentially reinstalls most system files while leaving the registry and installed programs intact. Otherwise, move forward to the partitioning and formatting section of the install.
The initial screen shows the hard disks connected to your system, and any partitions that may already be created.
A partition is simply a section of the free space on your hard-drive. Operating systems use partitions to logically assign drive letters. For example, if you have a single 40GB drive, you can allocate all the space to a single partition, but then you could only have a single drive (C:) visible in Windows.
If you chose to divide that 40GB into 4 different 10GB partitions, you could have 4 individual drives (say C:, D:, E:, and F:) within your Windows environment. Essentially, Multiple partitions allow multiple logical drives within a single physical drive, and can even allow different operating systems to co-exist on one drive if desired. Once a partition has been created, it must be formatted to be useful.

Will not run xp pro i'm stuck in 2000 mode mother board is ak77 pro 133 vt8233 will not run xp pro i've been told im pretty much sol. Is this true?

If you have a valid Win XP Pro CD and want to install the operating system you'll need to format your hard disk drive. If you have allot of data on you're hard disk drive, (In Win 2000) Suggest you create a second partition within the free space of you're hdd and install windows XP Pro. Boot you're system with the XP CD. Pay close attention to the display screens. Follow the instructions for creating a second partition.
Format the new partition. (Quick). Install windows XP on the new partition. Once completed you can copy your personal data to win XP.
If you choose to keep the win 2000 partition and you do not wish to have a dual boot system than remove/delete the root files from the 2000 partition. These files; Autoexec.bat and Boot.ini. You're new XP Boot.ini should read like this;
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer
Once you're satisfied an no longer need win 2000 use windows diskmgmt.msc from the run command to delete the win 2000 partition.
Win 2000 uses a FAT16 where Win XP uses the FAT NTFS.

Cheers!
Mike

I have 40gb hdd.need a partition scheme for windows xp such that i have 17GB gb for my games THANK YOU

Using the Windows XP installation disk, procede to install windows normally. In the windows setup you will get a list of options. Choose "C" to create partition. Create a 20GB partition. When that is done create another 20GB partition unless you plan on installing another Operating System such as Windows 7 later. If you want to keep XP and install Windows 7 at a later date on the same PC, then Set up 2 - 10GB partitions for Operating Systems and 1 - 20GB partitions for games. Make sure to install the games on the 20GB drive letter only so that Windows has enough space to run.

Trying too dual boot xp pro on toshiba tecra m5. conflict image of original xp pro, in slim select bay hdd. Need help with settings so as the same op system can be used on both drives.Any help would be...

in order to dual boot something.... you need to partition the hard disk... if there's only 1... you need a program that will create another partition from drive C...
for example the size of your Hard disk(drive C) is 160gb
you need a program that will split 160gb into 2 it should come out and you will have now two drives (C & D) with a size of 80gb each...(It depends on how large you want the other drives to have)...

the program is called Partition Magic 8.0 if you want that program.. i can send it to you... just contact me in my yahoo messenger... derick_10_02@yahoo.com

now it's time to install the Windows XP in each drive then you'll have a dual boot... or you can install Windows Vista on the other drive... so therefore you'll have Windows Xp and Windows Vista in one PC...

hope it will help you... tnx

After reformatting - hard drive is only 10GB

Hp and Compaq usually have drives partitioned into 2, second is used for recovery. What I'm thinking happened here might be that when you re-install your windows, you might have picked the smallest size(2nd partition). The only way out is to re-install your windows and when you do that, you kust delete the biggest partition or try partiton magic.
