Canon powershot A85 photo capture problem

Hi, I have canon powershot A85 nearly 3yrs old. Problem is that when I click a photo (under any possible setting) , the image is reddish all over and full of horizontal lines across the photo. The strange part is that Video capture is working perfectly OK. So I am not sure if the problem is with the sensor. I have tried formatting the flash card. replacing it. cleaning the lens. Has anybody seen this issue ??

Canon Powershot broken shutter/photo taking mechanism?

I hope you didn't chuck your camera, because this sounds like a problem with the CCD image sensor. I had the same problem with my Canon A85 and found out that Canon would cover the shipping and repair of the image sensor for FREE.

Please refer to this page, and then contact Canon (I reccomend calling; they're friendly, and the wait is not too incredibly long) to describe your problem. Make sure to mention that you believe the CCD image sensor is faulty, and you found the service notice they issued about the problem:

CCD sensor fault : playback fine but no image in capture mode. Replace the sensor. Canon repairs thse faults free of charge but you need to find out what their policy is with A85. As I said this is a classic : I get + - 5 A85s every week with this particular fault.

PowerShot A85 capture fault

Yup, it is a common problem. The shutter is jammed. I bet outside pictures are really overexposed. The horizontal lines are caused by the electronic noise created by the shutter solenoid trying to move the shutter. If the cameraq is no longer under warranty- Sometimes, you can free up the shutter by banging the camera in a hard surface like a desk or table. (Do this carefully, don't get carried away) If this doesn't work, you will need to replace the whole lens unit. this is best if the warranty is still good.
