Toner and Drum Display Reset

We have 11 brother printers in our office and we are having the same recurring problem. The toner light and the drum light are staying on even when the toner cartridge and drum was replaced, and the printer was non-operational. However a local printer company was able to reset one of the printers fixing the problem, but they will not divulge the information and was wondering would anyone know how to do this as this is a common problem with these printers.

Tedfarinajr is absolutely correct! You must have the drum and toner OUT when you hold down the GO button. Leave the drum and toner in and it will not reset. Thank you!!

They will reset fine with the drum and toner installed (I just did one). You just have to have the front door open and hold the "go" button down until all the lights are lit.
Please note. If you have a lot of toner dust inside the machine and some gets in the high voltage grid, it can cause arcing which in turn causes little flashes of light that can fool the machine into thinking the toner is low. Make sure the drum chamber is fairly clean as well as the drum itself. As someone else mentioned, don't swap toners between machines The bias voltage changes depending on how much toner is in the cartridge. If you put a different toner in, that makes the bias voltage wrong and you may affect your print quality. Only replace toners with new cartridges, and avoid the crappy refills (you wouldn't reuse your oil filter in your car would you?). No, I'm not a "repairer", I'm a service technician/engineering technologist.

All right, I'm going to take a major hit here. EVERY toner and drum unit comes with INSTRUCTIONS how to reset the counters. Your local company did you a favor the first time. I don't know what business your in, but let me know so I can call you consistently for your free but OBVIOUSLY knowledge that is COMPLETELY without value. Since you've obvioulsy thrown the instructions away, they are on the Brother website. HINT: leave the front cover open. If you wish, you may personally lambaste me at: biztechsvcs@hotmail.com Ed Paulinski

The toner cartridge on you machine has a gear mechanism on the side set to reset the toner when its new. Its basically to stop the refillers just refilling the toners. The local repairer has just rewound the gear to the right spot. I have done this myself as I'm a repairer myself. As you have 11 printers do not interchange toners as it confuses the printers as to how much toner is catually left. The drum reset should be in the box with the new drum. With the Brothers it usually involves holding down the button while powering on.

Actually, it's to reset the toner bias voltage when a new cartridge is installed.

Hi there!
You can remove the drum and toner, remove toner from the drum unit then gently rock the toner from side to side for about six times to distribute the toner inside, then on the drum unit slide the green tab on the upper left hand from left to rigth for about six times and then put it back to the home position. Reinstall the toner back to the drum unit and then put the drum and toner back to the printer. closed the front cover. the toner light should turn off,
Hope this helps.

Drum light flashes

This means that you will need to replace the drum soon. Order a new drum and when the light becomes steady or the print quality becomes poor, replace the drum. The drum should last ~12,000 pages. The part number is DR350. You may be able to order this from your Office Supply store; otherwise try the Brother Mall site: http://www.brothermall.com/Accessories/AccessoryDetail.aspx?AccessID=DR350&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1 .

The procedure is similar to replacing the toner but instead of putting a new thing of toner inside the drum, you remove the toner and put it in the new drum. Open the front cover and pull out the drum and toner assembly. Place on newspaper or other disposable material (toner may spill). Push down the blue lever to unlock the toner cartridge. Remove the cartridge from the drum. Unpack the new drum (keep it out of the light until ready to replace the drum). Push the toner cartridge into the new drum until it locks into place; the blue lever should lift automatically. Put the assembly back in the printer. Clean the printer as recommended in the manual while it is open; this includes cleaning the corona wire before replacing the drum assembly.

After replacing the drum, reset the drum counter: with the printer on and the drum light blinking, open the front cover and press and hold the GO button until all of the LEDs light up (about 4 seconds). Then release the GO button and close the cover. Check that the drum light is off. (The manual says you should do the reset first but I tend to avoid this in case of distractions.)

I hope this helps.

My all-in-one printer keeps telling me that I need to change the drum soon. I bought a new drum inserted it into the printer and now I can't print anything. Plus, it is still telling me that I need to...

This message would continue to appear if the drum counter was not reset when you replaced the drum. To reset the drum counter, follow the instructions listed below.

  1. Open the front cover.
  2. Press the Options key on the control panel.
The display will show "REPLACE DRUM - 1.YES 2.NO".
  3. Press 1 to reset the drum count.
  4. Close the front cover.
Note
Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic drum units and/or toner cartridges, or refill their Brother toner cartridge. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of unauthorized third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.
If you are using a genuine Brother drum and toner and after following this procedure the unit continues to show "CHANGE DRUM SOON", your machine may require service. Please contact the Customer Service Center.

How do I replace the drum on a Brother hl 2040.

I have 'reused' the same drum three times and still prints like a charm.
Open the toner door and pull out the toner/drum assembly. Take the toner off the drum tray. Use a alcohol pad or lint free cloth and wipe the mauve coloured drum to remove the excess lint and toner collected on the drum. Rotate the drum with the white gear and keep cleaning until the whole drum is done.
Put the toner back in the drum tray. Clean the corona wire by sliding the blue tab back and forth 3 or 4 times. Put the toner/drum back into the printer and close the door.
After the printer does the self test the drum light will cone on again so then you need to reset the counters.
Open the door again
Hold the GO button until all 4 lights are lit up
Release the GO button
Close the door
Printer will self test and should extinguish all the trouble lights.

The drum light came on (Brother HL 5240) and I replaced the drum with a new one and it still will not work... Any suggestions?

I continued looking and found where someone else had the same problem. I opened the front cover, held down the go key for 10 seconds and closed the door. This reset something because it works now.

Thanks

Brother 8460n - toner error

Hi, This worked for us:

The message "Toner Error" is usually caused by the drum and/or toner
cartridge not being installed properly or if the machine does not
recognize the toner. To clear this message, follow the steps listed
below:

1. Verify you are using Genuine Brother Cartridges. Brother strongly
recommends that you do not refill the toner cartridges provided with
your machine. We also strongly recommend that you continue to use only
Genuine Brother Brand replacement toner cartridges. Use or attempted use
of potentially incompatible tone cartridges in the Brother machine may cause damage to the machine and/or may result in
unsatisfactory print quality. Our warranty coverage does not apply to
any problem that is caused by the use of unauthorized third party toner
and/or cartridges. To protect your investment and obtain premium
performance from the Brother machine, we strongly recommend the use of
Genuine Brother Supplies.

2. Make sure that you are using the correct drum and toner cartridge(s)
for your machine. The part numbers for your model are as follows:
NOTE: Some cartridges can look EXACTLY the same among different models
and will fit the machine even if they are not designed for use in that
model. Verify the part number before using the cartridge(s).

TN550: Toner cartridge (standard)
TN580: Toner cartridge (high yield)
DR520 = Drum unitt.

3. Make sure that the cartridge is not damaged. Remove the toner
cartridge by following the steps listed below:

a. Press the cover release button and then open the front cover.

b. Remove the old drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. Place it on a
drop cloth or disposable paper to avoid scattering toner.
NOTE: Be careful not to spill the toner. If toner gets on your
clothes or hands, wipe or wash it off immediately with cold water.

c. Hold down the blue lock lever on the right and pull the toner
cartridge out of the drum unit.

d. Look at the toner cartridge and see if any parts or pieces appear to
be broken or missing, if so, the cartridge may be defective and should
be replaced.

4. If the toner cartridge is not damaged, reinstall it into the drum
unit. If it was damaged, use a new toner cartridge and reinstall it into
the drum unit.

5. Reset the drum/toner unit into the machine.

6. Close the front cover.

7. If the message "Toner Error' continues to appear on the display
unplug the machine from the wall outlet.

8. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

9. Look inside where the drum was. On the left side wall, look for a
small, black plastic lever/actuator. A flashlight may help see it.

10. Using the palm of your hand, slide it along the left wall in and
out a few times as this may free up the actuator/lever in case it is
stuck. The actuator/lever is spring loaded and needs to move back and
spring forward to operate correctly.

If the lever does not move, spring back or is missing and your machine
is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center
(ASC) in your area or contact Brother Customer Service by calling
1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding
holidays. If the machine is out of warranty, you can locate a Brother
Authorized Service Center using the information listed above.

If the lever moves freely and springs back to its original position
continue to Step 11.

11. Reinstall the drum and toner assembly, close the front cover and
plug the machine in.
