Question about Dell Inspiron 1420 Notebook

Dell ins 1420 laptop wont boot

I had some serious problems when my lap stopped working. whenever i open up a full-screen 3d application within seconds it will hang-up and start to flicker. in some part it becomes greenish and then i manually have to shutdown the system. i thought this was a software problem but, this happens in both linux and windows.
i had updated my bios to a10 a week ago. everything worked well except the above problem and unusual heating of cpu(in ubuntu's hardware sensor. gpu doesnt heat up that much). after these problems i opened up the laptop to check problems and mostly to clean( i work in a dusty environment). when i fixed them back it wont boot and ocassionaly gives 2 short beeps bios error code. i searched internet for what the code means. its mostly due to improper ram seating. so i checked the ram modules and exchanged them( i have 1x2gb ddr2). its still not working! HELP!

I have same machine. Google 1420 Nvidia. Heaps of us have same problem, the video card overheats and overtime it eventually fails.

I rarely use my laptop and it died with this issue in about 15 months. Make sure dell come out and replace motherboard. Not that this will fix it for long.

Seriously, there is a serious flaw with this machine and it will not last long after warranty from what I've read in the support forums.

    Last Dell I buy.

    Good luck

magooster857,
You cannot use a command prompt to find the password of your computer. If you made a recovery disk from within Windows you can boot to it to recover your password. You will need to purchase software online to recover your password or reinstall Windows.

My Dell Inspiron 1420 screen goes black

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop. I left it running overnight and when I checked in the morning the screen was moving up and down. I tried playing videos in full screen and it does, too. It seems as...

boot in the safe mode, see if issue still occurs (F8 at boot) if it does, then likely there is a problem with the Video Card or the LCD itself, I'm leaning toward the video card.
Try flashing the bios to current and installing the most current video driver, see if anything changes.

Nvidia card on dell 1420 no image on screen on boot up

Restart the computer in Safe Mode with Networking by continuously pressing F8 at Dell logo. Go to the Nvidia website and download the latest drivers for your machine. If you are experiencing no video whatsoever, then either the screen needs to be replaced or a connection is loose or not working behind the screen.

Dell Inspiron 1420 will no longer boot

you need to enter setup by tapping one of the f keys or the delete key. i'm not sure which it is for this model. when you enter the bios setup change the boot order to boot to the dvd first. hit f10 and save the change then reboot with your install disk in the drive. it should start installing.

My father had a similar problem with the HP he has. Basically, what has happened is the actual script that controls where the boot sector is located is corrupt.

Boot with your first recovery disk and try to fix the issue. If this doesn't work, then you'll have to reinstall.

Dell inspiron 1420 startup error

You need to cheat a little. First try to boot into safe mode by pressing the f8 key as soon as you hit the power (and keeping your fingers crossed on the other hand that it notices your doing this). Before you get too depressed just try booting into safe mode and then reboot normally. That may be all it take to fix it. Try this a few times before getting into the more serious fixes.

If you can get into safe mode you can simply copy your files off to a usb data drive. Those will still work. You may be able to use the wired network card if you select safe mode with network access. But don't count on that. The cd/dvd will not work so you can't burn it to disk. A flash drive will work on the usb while a external hard drive that connect via usb usually won't as it needs drivers.

The other way is to boot using a bootable cd. If you can get a vista install cd you can install over the top of your existing windows and retain your settings. If you don't know where everything is then you need to be a bit creative and use something like the demo Ubuntu cd that boots into a windows like operating system that will allow you to copy stuff over the network to the usb drive or the network.

If you have a friend with the right laptop or desktop you can take the drive out and set it up as a second drive. When they boot normally they then can see your drive and just copy burn or move your stuff. This is what I do in the shop when the existing system is too messed up to work with. There may be the odd thing you won't get access to but you should get most of it.
