RAM of 512 MB

My lenovo model is of 512 MB RAM. Does its size affect the storage capacity and speed of my laptop? What would be the difference between 512 MB RAM and 1GB RAM computer?

If you are looking to improve the speed of your laptop, the best thing you could do is to add more RAM. I normally install the maximum amount of RAM possible into each of my systems. There are other things that you can do as well, such as using fixed-size paging files, disabling unneeded services on the computer, forcing the Executive to stay in RAM instead of allowing it to be paged out, and for a tiny, in many cases almost immeasurable, performance increase, defrag the hard disk.

Hi,
The 512MB that you have mentioned is the memory (also known as RAM) and the storage capacity of the computer depends on the Hard disk capacity. RAM and Hard disk are 2 different components and amount of RAM cannot affect the Hard disk (HDD) capacity. So, RAM will not affect the storage capacity.
The RAM is the high speed memory between your computers processor and the HDD (HDD is sluggish). What computer does is that the data that is required by it, it fetches to the RAM from where it can read the data much-much faster. More the amount of RAM, more the amount of data that can be accessed at greater speed and more would be the speed of the computer. So the computer with 512MB RAM would be slower than 1GB (1000MB) RAM computer and it would be very clear when multiple applications would run simultaneously however if you use only a single low weight application like notepad.exe then it really would not make much difference.
Hope that makes it clear. Let me know in case you have any further issues/doubts regarding the same and I would be glad to assist you ahead.
Please do rate the solution if you like my response.

Thanks and Regards,
Srinivas

Look speed depends more on condition and cache of hard disk and size, and how much it is loaded with data and how fragmented are ur files ,

Ram does make a difference but only when booting OS and Loading different programs opening them after windows boot as ms word or other office application u will find smooth running of apps no waiting time and hangups in performance if u are enuff with ram like if u use XP 1 Gb is more than enuff but Vista needs 2 GB to work smoothly

but i will again say tell em ur problems in detail i mean where u are getting slow performance i can solve it for u anmd suggest later after diagnosis what is best for ur system i have experience in this

Pls rate me Fixya fo rhelp ! or ask for more help !

Will Mercury 810e motherboard support 1.0 GB (512 MBX2) SD RAM?

I cannot directly answer that question because you did not supply the motherboard model number. You will have to look this up yourself, here is the url for Mercury support
http://www.mercury-pc.com/downloads.php
The model number is usually printed on the motherboard, find it and you can download the manual, specs and drivers.

RAM chip sets

It is OK to mix chip (SODIMM) capacities in the 2 slots in your notebook.

The best system performance will be when you have 2 x 512MB but for now if you install 1 x 512MB, you could even leave the old chip in the other slot, it'll be fine.

I have 2 questions:- 1. I have a hard disk of 80GB capacity.I want to augment my storage capacity with an additional Hard Disk of 500GB in the second slot of my CPU.Will my motherboard support that.My...

The motherboard has 2 memory slots with each slot allowing up to 1GB modules of DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200, DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot. Do not mix RAM speeds.

As for hard drives, the board has the capacity of:

PATA (Parallel) - 2 x ATA100 4 Dev. Max
SATA 1.5 Gb/s - 2

I would assume that the 500GB drive you have is a SATA drive. and the 80GB as PATA. If that is the case, then the two drives would be on different controllers and would work in the system. Typically, it is recommended that the SATA drives is the main hard drive holding your OS.

As always, you would need an open bay in your computer case as well as adequate power to the PWS to complete the installation.

What is the maximum memory capacity of acer aspire 5600 model

According to the specs of this laptop model, it supports up to 4 GB of DDR2 533/667 MHz memory using two soDIMM modules. This means that you will have to replace the 512 MB memory module already installed in your laptop, & replace it with 2 soDIMM DDR2 533/667 MHz memory modules, each of 2 GB capacity.

Just need to know how to change the ram in my Sony Vaio PCG-v505ap

visit vaio manual in
ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/Manuals/Notebooks/
You can do this in two ways: opening your notebook and taking a look on the memory modules already installed (we will explain more about this later) or running a program like Everest (available on our download section). We ran Everest (going to Motherboard, Chipset, Memory Slots) on our notebook and found that it was using two 256 MB DDR-SDRAM PC2700 (“DDR333”) modules, for a total of 512 MB.

Figure 1: Checking your current memory configuration with Everest.
If your notebook has an empty memory slot, just go to the computer store and buy a new SO-DIMM module with the same technology (SDRAM or DDR-SDRAM) and speed of any capacity you want – of course you need to know the capacity limit of your notebook. You cannot install a 1 GB module in a notebook that only accepts modules up to 512 MB, for example. Our notebook – a Sony Vaio PCG-V505ECP – accepts modules up to 1 GB, for a total of 2 GB RAM, since it has two memory slots.
For example, if your notebook has one 256 MB module and an empty memory slot, if you buy and install another 256 MB module, it will have 512 MB RAM. If you buy and install a 512 MB module, your notebook will have 768 MB.
If your notebook already has two memory modules, you will need to remove one of the installed modules in order to install the new one. If the two modules have the same capacity, it doesn’t matter which one you will take away, but if they have different capacities, remove the one with smaller capacity. The new RAM capacity of your notebook will be of the capacity of the remaining module plus the capacity of the new module.
In our case, our notebook has two 256 MB modules. So we will remove one of these modules and install a new one on its place. We bought a 1 GB-module, so after installing it our notebook will have 1,280 MB RAM installed (memory math is tricky, since 1 GB equals to 1,024 MB not 1,000; so 1,024 MB + 256 MB = 1,280 MB).

I have 256 MB RAM which is slow, can i upgrade it to 512 MB RAM

Depends completely on what motherboard the computer has and what it supports, I could check on it if you have and brand and model of the computer, or from the motherboard.

Sure the prosessor speed doesn't affect the memory amount possible don't worry about that, just need to find out how much is supported and at what speed etc.

Thanks,
Ekse
