The HEI has nothing to do with the alternator

The HEI needs battery voltage, not the resistor,
that was there for the point ignition distributor

Unless you moved wires around to feed the HEI,
you just diagnose the alternator as usual

New doesn't mean it works
Have to know how to test it

SOURCE: need wireing diagram to change 72 nova over to hei distributor

Hey , just take the positive wire from the coil you are removing and feed it to the + terminal on the HEI dist. cap.the other terminal under there is for your tachometer. If you are mounting a master kill switch in the bumper for drag racing- attatch the kill wire to the tach terminal also.
Thats it you just plug the three wire pigtail from the dist. base(pickup) to the cap and you are off.
Remember firing order is 18436572 in a clockwise direction. to find #1 remove #1 plug and have someone"bump" the engine over while holding your finger over the hole-carefull. then line up the slotted mark on the crank pulley with the big notch on the timing indicator. Good luck

SOURCE: Pegging aftermarket tach. SunPro CP2011 installed

had one break like that! my buddy did the same thing! never figured out what it really was but it came down to it was just pushed past it's last leg. not sure if this is you case i would check the signal wire that goes into the engine bay! what ever you have it hook to like the coil etc... if that is fine i would say it is time for a new one or a warranty! good luck

SOURCE: wiring an hei distributor

You shouldn't need a spark box because thee coil is located in the dist. cap. You need to run a 12v switched power source to the side of the dist. cap that is marked dist. if it isn't maked it is the term. that is on the front right of the conector pad. the one on the left is for hooking up a tach.

SOURCE: wire position for 75 Chevy 350 HEI on the

Order is 18436572. Put the timing mark on the crank at 0 and the rotor should be pointing either to the firewall or the front of the engine. If at the wall, turn the crank one more time and it is now pointing at the #1 wire position on the distributor.
left side cylinders are 1357 right, 2468 wire order is in the direction the rotor turns when cranking.

What year is this engine? and ci

From this chart - I think you may be misreading the number - 3970010 is possibly the actual number: Which makes the engine pretty old 68-72 350 V8 - 4 bolt main. I included past this number so that you can see that the number you posted doesn't actually exist. And thus my conclusion that the 9 is most likely a 0. I have a 87 chevy that is not starting after it warms up has a new batt and starter the alt is charging i can start it let it run 10 min wont start back let it set 1 hour starts up

1987 Chevy with a very old problem.

LACKING INFORMATION:
We believe it may have the 8 cyl, 305. or 350.

INFO:
We have reviewed your problem and have come up with the following theory and recommendation.

RECOMENDATION:
You have an HEI Distributor ignition.
The control module that is bolted in the bottom of the distributor it has a special heat dissipating grease that transfers the heat from the module to the heat sink. Over time it drys out or was not installed with the correct amount.

Replace the Control module and clean out the old grease and install new grease.

Hope this guides you to the correct fix for your vehicle.

Replacement chevrolet distributor

Hei distrubitor with vaccum advance. Only real wire needed should be the power to your coil needs to go in on power on HEI. Might need a ground too not sure. Other then that it's optional. Like tach etc. Should slide right into place of the orginal. Just have to line up rotor an then time it. If you can work on the old system, the HEI's are ten times easier with the basic principals
