Find and download a network adapter driver
i have a HP compaq desktop pc. i formated and reinstalled os in that pc. that pc have a inbuilt eathernet port. how i can activate that port.

well this is the link for you to download drivers for your compaq desktop

just type your compaq desktop model no ...for eg.compaq presario v 6000..you need to know your model no in order to download drivers for your desktop pc...
for windows xp if you want networking between your computers attach your computers with cross cable and right click on my computer for system properites > there you will see computer name tab > there you will see network id button > click on it and run the installation on all the computers you want to be in network....

what's your OS? Windows XP?
Check if your Network is installed under My Computer >> Properties >> Device Manager
or
On your Desktop >>> Network Neighborhood >> Properties
