Connect 2 PCs to Westell 6100 DSL modem

aseiden on Sep 14, 2007

Verizon's DSL modem, Westell 6100, has only one ethernet jack. I'd like to connect two Windows XP computers to the modem. Do I need a hub, a router, or something else?

well depends on if you want to hookup wirelessly with one or not. If the modem has a USB connection as well as ethernet, then you can hook up 1 computer to usb and 1 to ethernet with no problems. If you do want a wireless hookup then yes, you need a wireless router. I would just go with a router because of the convenience of being able to go wireless if you decide to. I would suggest a Linksys WRT-54GL with a 3rd party firmware (DD,-WRT, Tomato, etc.) Hope this helps.

The Westell 6100 DSL modem already is in actuality a modem/router and as such can be connected and configured to work by attaching via hardware network switch such as the brand name Linksys EZXS55W available at: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-EZXS55W-EtherFast-5-Port-Workgroup/dp/B00003006E/ref=pd_sim_e_1

This solves and avoids the networking configuration dilema and problem of putting the Westell 6100 in bridge mode and all the anxiety that arises from that exercise and experiment in networking.

JJ,
Yea, isn't that annoying!  Took me like 15 - 20 min to figure out you just leave it blank and click ok or apply whatever it is and you're golden.  I'll post seperate here for a full set of bridging instructions.

- Step by step instructions for Bridging a Westell 6100F Model F90-6100... (Carrier Verizon)
1. Plug in straight to the modem. (If your doing more than one of these i suggest statically assigning your computer an IP such as 192.168.1.10 but this is not completely necessary.
2. Start -> Run -> http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm
3. Sign in.  Username: admin  Password: Admin
4. Cuss ths sh&* outa your computer when it decides to randomly bluescreen and restart on you... ole lappy's seen better days...
5. Click the disable button at the bottom of this "Warning!! Restricted Page"
6. Click Cancel for the Detect WAV config status.
7. Click OK to reboot modem
8. Click the "My Network" Icon across the top.
9. You may get a User Settings Page asking to change password.  don't change it, it won't do ne good... just click apply and ok.
10. Once on the Network tab click on the Network Connection link on the left under Main, and Network Status.
11. Click on the Broadband Connection (DSL) link.
12. Click Edit for the VC (currently set to PPPoE)
13. Select Bridge under the Protocol dropdown box and click apply.  Click ok to reboot when prompted.
14. Once it reloads click back into the My Network page and Network connections again.
15. Click on LAN and uncheck the box for "Private LAN DHCP Server Enable."
16. Click apply
17. Viola you're done!
Note:  if you ever need to access the modem again you'll need to set your computer manually to a 192.168.1.x ip 255.255.255.0 subnet and 192.168.1.1 gateway.

so I have a westell modem, but how do I make it bridge so i can use my linksys router to it... I tried connecting to westell odem and it just wolt let me in, everytime I access it the log in window apears asking for username and password....admin, password... I am directed to a Verizon window that is is asking me to change user name and password and it doesnt go anywhere else after that, it keeps asking me to change un/password...no matter what I do it does the same.

If you connect 1 usb and the other ethernet, only one cpu at a time can access the internet. Is there another inexpensive way to have it so it can access at the same time?
