Old Magnavox television - will not switch on

The problem could be the capacitors to the power supply. WARNING: capacitors carry very high voltages that can shock and kill. I don't know what your skill level is: you would have to 1.) disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet and remove the TV's casement, exposing the internal electronic components. Although lower voltage capacitors will drain and discharge their stored electrical energy over time; larger voltage capacitors (not to be confused with the physical size of a capacitor) do not.
You would have to either discharge all the capacitors using a resistor (3 watts or greater) or by shorting out the legs of the capacitor using an insulated screwdriver rated for high voltages.
To make sure that the capacitors were properly discharged, verify the process using an ohm meter. There are a slew of YOUTUBE videos basics on capacitors; how to identify a bad capacitor; how to discharge a capacitor safely; how to de-solder components and perform re-work soldering. If you need more help I'm happy to oblige. Best wishes, I hope my comments were helpful.

No power out

You have no power because you didn't fix 2 or 3 electrolytic capacitors when you saw warning signs. Warning signs start as horizontal lines every half inch or so. Black bars on the top and bottom, then collapsing to a horizontal line, then complete failure.
You will need a horizontal output transistor, the aforementioned electrolytic capacitors, a voltage rectifier, possibly a high voltage coil called a flyback transformer, wire wound resistor, maybe a low resistance resistor, maybe a high voltage capacitor. In some tvs you need an EPROM ic. I hope you can find someone with the knowledge and expertise these days when the modern throwaway society put almost all electronic repair shops out of business. It may cost about $300 - $400 to get repaired or you can get a modern flat-screen tv for $800 - $1,000 and reinvest that money.

I have a Vizio hdm hdtv. It is a 42 in. The screen is black but there is sound. Can not afford to take it anywhere to be fixed so I would like some ideas on trying to fix it ourselves

Hello,

The power supply converts the 120/230vac 50/60Hz into DC, then the high frequency (50~100kHz) switching circuits convert it back to AC but at high frequency which allows the power supply to use smaller and much lighter weight transformers (Ferrite core instead of heavy iron core), then this high frequency AC voltage is fed to the rectifier Diodes to get the DC output and filtered by DC filter capacitors that must have low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance), if general purpose electrolytic caps are use, they will fail within a year or less due to high ESR.

The power supply has Standby 5vdc (5VSB, this is a MUST have before anything else will work, when this voltage is not present, there will be no any indicator light on the front panel) which is always on the minute the TV is plugged into the AC outlet, so it is on 24/7 and that is why the power supply will fail even though you may use the a TV not very often. It will see all the voltage spikes and surges 24/7.
This 5vdc is used to power the Processor and the Infrared remote receiver module which will be waiting for the command from the remote control or from the power switch, when the Power on command is received, the Processor will send the turn on signal (3.3~5vdc) to the power supply module (PSON pin) to the switch on the main 5vdc for the rest of the logic and Tuner circuits, 12~16vdc for the sound amplifiers (mostly Class D amplifier for efficiency and small size) and for the T-CON board (interface board between the LCD panel, some T-CON uses 5vdc, and the Logic board), and 24vdc for the Back lights inverter board (if there is no 24vdc then no back light).
Common failures:
Blown main AC fuse due to shorted out Diodes, transistors.
Bad capacitors leaking or bulging tops:
Shorted Diodes, transistors in the DC output side.

Hope this will help in solving the problem, and do take care in handling the television, because it contains high voltage

It was working normally and then it sound like pop and completly turn off, no light , nothing, does it has a fuse ????

Microwaves that I have worked on had an inside fuse, commonly a buss 15 amp that protects the microwave high voltage system. You have to take the front panel apart to find it. Be careful that you turn of the power, pull the cord and be sure that you discharge any capacitors before you work on any parts. However, the fuse should be where the 110 v line enters the high voltage section.

Won't turn on standby light blinks seven times

Hello,

If your television is not coming on and blinking power light, then there is a problem inside the unit. The problem is not from the power panel, because if the power panel is not receiving power supply, the power light will not be blinking.

So the problem is mainly a bad capacitor from the main board of the television. And to solve the problem, you wil have to unplug the television, then you leave it for a while, lets say about 6 hours so the high voltage will dissipate and to avoid being shocked.

Then you get your screwdriver, a cup to put the screws in so it wont get missing, then a soldering iron, lead, then you get the back cover off by unscrewing it. Lift up the main board and the power board and assess them for any bad capacitor, then you get the exact type of capacitor and fix it in, then solder it back on the board. To remove the bad capacitor, all you have to do is to turn the back of the board and melt off the bad capacitor from the tip, then you fix in a new capacitor, then you solder it on the board, then cut the excess tip with a cutting pliers.

Then you reverse the process to reassemble it back together.

Take care

NB: Check the lamp also before plugging the television and turning it on.

The Power button on my TV flashes red yellow and green with a black screen, I have Tried to reset the TV by unplugging the power but its just not working

Hello,

If your power light flashed and the screen is not coming up, then it means there is a problem inside the unit that needs to be fixed.

The problem is most likely a power problem, the television is receiving power but not using it up. This used to be caused by a bad capacitor on either the main panel or the power panel of the television.

To fix this, you need to unplug the television for about an hour or two, so the high voltage will dissipate, then you unscrew the screws that holds the front cover and the back cover together. Then you unscrew the panel cover to gain access to the main panel and power panel, then you turn to the part where you have the capacitors, to assess them, if any looks swollen, pressed or burnt, then it is faulty and needs to be replaced.

To replace the capacitor all you have to do is to melt off the lead from the tip of the capacitor from the back of the panel using a soldering iron then fix in a new one and resolder it back on then cut off the extra tip of the capacitor.

Also try to assess the lamp if it is getting burnt so you wont have to open it twice, if it is looking burnt also, get a replacement for it.

Then reassemble the television together and turn it on. It will come on now.

Take care and good luck

My TV does not turn on power and the red right on TV blink 5 times repeately. How can I fix this.

Hello,

When you have your televisions standby light blinking for about some time, it means there is a power problem affecting the television. It is recaiving power but not using it up.

The power problem is most likely caused by a bad capacitor or a bad power panel. The bad capacitor can either be on the main panel or the power panel.

To confirm, unplug your television for about an hour or two so the high voltage will dissipate, then you unscrew the screws that are at the back of the television to gain access to the main and power panels, then you carefully turn the back of the panel where you have the capacitors and check for bad capacitors, if it looks swollen, compressed, of burnt, then it is faulty.

The solution to that is for you to turn to the other side of the panel where you have the tip of the capacitors and melt off the burnt capacitor using a soldering iron, then fix in an new capacitor with the same capacity in the holes and solder it to the panel. Then cut off the extra tips of the capacitors, then fix the panel back on the television and couple it back together.

After doing that the television will be in good condition once again, and if there are no bad capacitors on both panels, then it means the power panel is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Take care and good luck.

I have a sony bravia sxrd television and when it is on sometimes the screen goes blank, the power light blinks green, but there is still sound.

You have a leaky capacitor in the high voltage section of your tv and it will eventually fail completely if not replaced. This is not an expensive fix $50. ballpark
