How to install a ASUS CB-5216A 52x CD-RW Burner DVD-ROM

I just bought an ASUS CB-5216A 52x CD-RW Burner DVD-ROM Combo drive and I don't have a clue how to install it in my Dell Inspirion 530 desktop. I don't know very much about computers expecially when it comes to doing stuff like this. Can somebody help me?

Thanks. Forgot to mention that I want to add this CD/DVD drive to the one that's already installed. There wasn't any cables that came with the new CD/DVD drive, am I going to have to go buy additional cables?

Is ATA and SATA the same thing or two different things. The CD/DVD that is already installed in my computer is a PLDS DVD+-RW DH 16A6S ATA device and the back of it looks nothing like the one I want to install additionally, it says it's has a IDE interface. Also, there is not any ribbons(?) on the inside of my computer, is there any type of adaptor available?

  • Angie Martin Apr 15, 2009

The cable that is connected to the CD/DVD drive does not connect to the hard drive. The motherboard has 4 SATA drive connectors, 2 which are being used, one for hard drive and the other for the CD/DVD drive already installed. The new CD/DVD drive that I want to add says it's ATA-100 supported whatever that means.

Looked and didn't see an IDE port, only saw SATA. Would a SATA to IDE converter adapter work, came across that on the internet, since I can only find the SATA connectors?

Found a less expensive one on another web site, gonna give it a try. Thanks for your help.

Here is a site that has a good manual for installing the Dvd Burner. It is very stright forward once you open up the case. Just make sure that you unplug the computers power cable, open up the case. Notice how the cables in the back of the cd rom are connected. Take the CD rom out and slide the new one in. The site listed below also has pictures to help you out.

Most likely, but it all depends on how your computer is setup. If you bought a Sata drive, then Yes you would need additional cable. If it is IDE, you might have an extra IDE port on the cable itself. If you dont have an extra port then you would need to get another IDE Cable.

When you open up your computer, the cable that is connected to your CD Rom, does that cable also connect to your hard drive? You can tell if you follow the from your CD-Rom all the way down to your motherboard. If your CD-Rom is connected on the same cable with your hard drive, you will need to get another IDE Cable for your new cd rom. Look on your motherboard to see if you have 2 IDE Ports on it. They should look Identical, the only difference might be the color. You can connect your new CD-Rom to that port.

    Hope this helps

Ok, that being said, you will need to get a IDE cable, you can go to Compusa or order it online. It seems like you have a newer model motherboard so most likely you will have only one IDE port on the mother board. It should look like the link below, connect one end of the cable to the IDE Controller and the other end to the new dvd burner.

Once you install it, it should show up automatically.

Yes, in that case you would need the converter. something like this should do the trick.

Problems with my CD-RW\DVD-R

Maybe it's time to replace but try this last thing before opening the trash can lid:- Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete. Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers.
