It's either taped to the bottom of the router or :-)

There are 4 ways to implement wireless security in a Linksys router, Disable SSID (broadcast of wireless name), WEP (Wireless Equivalent Privacy), WPA (Wireless Protected Access), and MAC address filtering. These are probably listed in order of ease of use and degree of security and are covered here:

Not broadcasting the SSID doesn't make it invisible, it just doesn't send out the name. I guess an enterprising 12-year old could probably figure it out, but it does keep the casual user out of the network. MAC address filtering is the most severe, but it means that every user's MAC address has to be discovered and allowed in your network. Not much fun if you have friends over or test a lot of wireless equipnement.

In a Linksys, network keys come in two flavors, WEP or WPA. The link above explains the difference. The easiest one for most of us to use is WEP. It's not as secure as the WPA, but it keeps the casual user out of our networks. I imagine the "hacker" can break the code, but I'm just concerned about the neighbors. Both schemes will slow down the you're really going to notice :-). I still do my laptop drive synchronization to the file server via wireless and it runs overnight.

To implement 64-bit WEP, you need a 10 character HEX key. I pick something simple like 1011121314 or FACE123456. (hex being 0-9, A-F). In our Netgear routers, It stays visible in the router so if you forget, you can see it. I'm pretty sure that the longer the key, the more overhead is added to your transmission, but you can make your WEP key 128 bit if you think 26 characters is better than 10. If you use WPA, you can pick your key like (Wir3le55), but if you don't spell it right, or forget it, you have to reset the keys.
This visibility of a WPA key may not apply to Linksys, but it's something to check.

You can easily spend an hour or more on the Linksys link trying to understand what to do with security. When I did mine, I didn't find out until I was on vacation that I even needed it. We get activity reports of websites visited emailed to us, and the reports kept coming in! It turned out that one of our neighbors was using our internet while we were gone. I never found out which one, but we now have 4 or 5 networks to choose from LOL.

So, the quickest way back into the router is to turn on WEP, give it an SSID name, give it a 10 character HEX key, and save it, then go to your laptop, log into the Wireless with the same key and you're online.

Fast explanation to a long post.

How can I get the router IP of my Linksys 2.4GHz broadband router?

The Linksys G router gives you both wired and wireless connections over a broadband Internet connect to create a local area network. The Linksys router is compatible with wireless G and B devices, through the 2.4-GHz wireless band. The wireless speed is at 54 megabytes per second and you can get 100 megabytes per second with a wired connection. You have to set up the wireless configuration on the Linksys before using it on your network.

Plug the router's power cable into an electrical outlet. Attach an Ethernet cable into the Internet port on the back of the router. Connect the other end into your broadband modem. Connect your computer to the Linksys G using another Ethernet cable. This Ethernet cable can go into any of the wired router ports. Open your Internet browser. Type "" in the address bar and hit "Enter." This is your router's IP address and the home of its Web configuration page. Click "Wireless." Click "Manual." Alter your SSID, also known as your network name. You can change this name to any value that you want. You can also change the wireless channel if you are in an area with many wireless connections that may interfere. Click "Save Changes." Click "Wireless Security." Choose an encryption method to encrypt your wireless transmissions. WPA or WPA2 are common security protocols you can use in wireless networks. Input a network key, also known as the network password. Click "Save Changes."

My Zhone 1518-A1 modem-router keeps loosing internet connection although wifi connected. Is it normal that the internet led is blinking?

Its normal for the internet light to blink, it means that its having an activity.

Try accessing the modem GUI (graphic users interface) and then change the WEP key or security key , if the modem-router is not password protected then just reset it.

You can also change the power values on it

Hope this helps

Well this adapter works on 2.4 Ghz G standard network. You can use any router that operates at 2.4 Ghz.

To make it work, perform the steps below:

1. Double click on WG111 icon from the right hand extreme bottom corner of the screen, near the system clock, in the system tray.
2. Click on networks tab.
3. Click on the SCAN button - This will show a listing of all available networks.
4. Select the network you wish to connect to and click on the "CONNECT" button.
5. This will automatically take you back to the settings tab.
6. If you are using WEP security then Enter the WEP KEY under the option 'Enter Key manually' under the settings Tab.
7. Apply Settings .
8. This should get you connected to your selected network.
9. Click on the 'About' tab and check the IP address.
10. If you are getting an IP address in the format of 192.168.1.x, try to go online.
11. If you are not getting an IP or the IP is in the format of 169.254.x.x, restart the computer and then try to go online.

If issue persists, please contact the router manufacturer for the exact information on how to find the WEP KEY.

Also, disable any firewalls which you have installed on the computer.

Hope this helps.

Wireless router connection

Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider.

To access the Linksys setup page:

Using your web browser go to URL address You will then be prompted to login to your router. A log-in screen asking for the password will automatically appear. At this time enter the default password “admin”, in lower case letters into the password field. The username field may be left blank at this time. (Note: both the default username and default password are set to “admin” on some of the newer Linksys router models).

Follow the instructions below to set up your wireless name and encryption:

Linksys suggests changing the SSID (network name) and the Wireless Channel of your router. Also, if it is possible, enable the Wireless Security of your router.
To change the router’s SSID or the wireless network’s name, click here.
To enable the wireless security on the router, click here.

After you do all the above, click on the wireless icon in the sytem tray by the clock on your laptop. Then click on "View all wireless networks". There you will see your network, click on it and type in your security key twice.
You should be able to get online.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Wireless -g 2.4 GH2 54 MBPS IS VERY SLOW

It depends on what you are doing with your wireless network, how many devices are on the network wirelessly and what is around in the area such as other radio noise (cordless phones, scanners, etc..) that might be on the same channel or using the same frequency.
