Question about HP Computers & Internet
I turned it upside down and cleaned it as best as I could, saved off all the important files. I let it dry for a few hours and the keys are sticky (not a big surprise on that one, I plan to change out the keypad) however now the sound isn't working at all. This is my work laptop and it is no longer under warranty. I dont want to tell my boss that I spilled anything on it, but I want my sound back. I tried headphones to see if it was the speakers, or possibly the main board inside, the sound didn't work with headphones either so Im guessing its an expensive fix. Any suggestions?
Hm...from the sounds of it you may be looking at a motherboard problem. I would check the audio drivers first, just to make sure it wasn't a coincidence that audio stopped working.
To check the drivers go to the device manager:
XP: go to the start menu, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties". Click on the "Hardware" tab of the new window. Click the "Device Manager" button.
Vista: go to the start menu, right click on "Computer", select "Propterties". In the new window select "Device Manager" from the list on the left.
In the device manager if you have any items that have any question marks in a yellow circle then you have a bad driver.
If the drivers aren't the problem then your best bet would be to look on Ebay or something and try to find a non-working machine of the same model to swap the motherboard from.
If it's just the tops of the keys that are sticky you can wipe those off, if it's the underside of the keys and they stick when you press down then they are cleanable, just much more difficult.
