Question about Philips Epic 17PF9936-37 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

1 Answer

17" Philips LCD TV has sound, faint blue flashes and blinking pwr

Philips 17PF9936/37 now has no video, I get sound, and a bit of blue flashing on the screen. The power light starts out green, then blinks red after a couple of minutes. The power supply measures at +12.3 volts ok. I have tried connecting the video into all ports but no change. Any ideas? Thanks.

Ordered replacement capacitors and replaced them just fine.

However, I noticed the cable (philips part #313913102961) going from the scaler board to the LCD display had several wires with insulation that was missing. The wires were touching eachother. I went looking for a replacement cable at the Philips support page (support.philips.com), Encompass_parts.com, and andrewselectronics.com. The answer I got was "it is no longer available."

So, I tried to repair the small, 40 pin cable end by removing the pins. I got most pins out, but cracked the connector. The pins were not repairable nor reusable, and of course, the connector is not available at the above sources either.

I don't recall ever seeing one exactly like it. Maybe someone knows what it is called? Or where I can get the replacement pins or connector?

    fyi:

I ordered the capicitors from http://www.part-express.com, and also ordered replacement connector pins (WM2562-ND), that "may" work from http://www.Digikey.com that go to a Romex connector of similar dimensions. We'll see if they work once they come in.

I agree. Philips discontinued providing the cable assembly, and couldn't/wouldn't tell me anything about the connector. Somewhere there are probably hundreds of these things sitting in a bin or box. At least the individual pins I received from digikey.com can be squeezed into the connector. They are longer and have a wider diameter but can be forced into the plastic connector. So, that will be my next project. Thanks.

It's fixed! I found a replacement cable athttp://www.shopjimmy.com. Unfortunately they mixed up the cable packs initially, but rectified it after a phone call.

So, after following the advice here, I replaced the bulging capacitors and smoked multi-colored ribbon cable, I am good to go. Thanks!

GP151001, LCD TV's are similar to LCD computer monitors and subject to same faults that are common in both types of these devices. If you do not own a 20-25w fine-point soldering pencil and know what to look for and replace bad capacitors that have failed, you will not be able to repair the unit. I assume that you may have a VOM/DMM to measure the AC to DC Black-Brick power supply that sits on the floor? Inside the unit is another type of supply called an INVERTER. It takes 12vdc and turns it into 800 to1200v ac to light the Cold Cathode Fluorescent tubes on the rear of the lcd panel. There are also 2 other power supply circuits that get power from the 12.3v brick. they provide +5volts and maybe 3.3v to provide voltage to the digital signal processing circuits and audio circuits.

Your problem lies inside the TV/monitor and may only need some new capacitors to be installed. to see typical bad capacitors, visit these sites that have posted pictures. http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t... and http://www.net/blog-entry/specialed/2008/12/31/how-to fix-your-lcd-monitor and pkrobot.freehostia.com/LCDRepair5.htm then you will know what to lookfor inside your tv set. then you will have a better understanding of what you are dealing with. Hope this has been of some help. I'm louie12fix on fixya or lmistyrel@ aol.com Bye for now.

GP151001, Typically these cable/wire connectors fall into a catagory called HIGH DENSITY INTERCONNECT connectors or similar type. I should think that the whole assembly should be available somewhere ****!!! It's just this kind of thing that really gets me P.O.ed louie12fix

These blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/

I have sound on my philips tv but no video

Hi

There are some circumstances for which this type of problem occurs to your TV....

You'll need to do this in the dark or low light conditions! Make sure TV is off. Now turn on the TV. If the TV "glows" when you turn it on, the problem is the TCON board. There is also a slight chance that it's the main input board...but this is less likely. However if the TV does not "glow" when you turn it on, the problem is the back light inverter boards.

Also hold a flash light to the screen after it goes off and see if you can see a faint picture. Sounds like your backlight might be cutting off. Repair can be expensive but some of the newer units don
