Question about Nikon COOLSCAN 5000 ED Film Scanner

3 Answers

Most of the time my Nikon 5000 works well. Recently I encounter the following problem. After several normal scans the program stops after the physical scan. (can hear from the scanner movment.) Nothing happens tha means next step is not started. MS Task Manager shows Nikon scan running. The Log (in Nikon Scan) say scan aquired. Sometimes restarting the scan process works most of the time it does not. When going to the next image it works normal. Comming back the the same image sometimes works sometimes not. I use Vista 32, Firmware Nikon 1.02 and Nikon scan 4.02 (used 4.03 with same problem) Programm uninstalled with registry key killer multiple times.

I had the problem where the scanner would stop or hang during the scanning phase.
Found to be caused by PC getting to warm. Only affects scanning. Not any other programs.
When it starts to get warm it gets a bit buggy and then eventually continues to hang. If I turn off Roc or Gem it might do a few more but it will inevitably stop. On hot days it doesn’t let me do many at all. When it gets to over 27c inside There is no point trying.
Opening the case seems to help.
When scanning kodachrome I don’t use Ice, it seems to make things buggy and it seems to cut out powerlines.
I import scan from photoshop. This doesn’t affect the buggyness.
To clean the slides I use a soft puffy brush that I got from a camera shop.
I spent hours trying to figure this out. It probably won’t help all of you with this problem as I reckon the software is just a bit buggy.

Hi, I have the same problem. I am running on the same computer with the same software Nikon Scan without problems. Found out that the problem happens mostly when a crop is selected that just eliminates the scanning frame. Without crop mostly OK. However no reason why and no real solution

Muskelfuss pointed me in the right direction. I ran into the same problem. After doing a bunch of successful batch scans, I made a minor adjustment in the Crop, and all of a sudden, the scanner would hang up on "Acquiring Scan", getting to about 98% and just stopping.

I believe the issue is the size of the crop. Mine had been at .88 x 1.32 when I had the problem. I increased that to .90 x 1.35, and the problem was solved.

This crop, by the way, still eliminates the scan frame, which needs me to believe it's the size that's the issue, and not whether the scan frame is included or not. Can't say why.

On Nikon Scan 4.0.3 on Vista 64 Business.

I inserted my negative holder in backwards on my Nikon 5000 35 mm scanner. Then I could get the last (5th) slide scanned. But I can not get the scanner to work on my new IMac because of no working driver. Silver Fast has no drivers for the Nikon 5000

Trying to install Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED, for some reason the installation disc doesn't have the LS-5000 ED driver software...? I am running Win Vista. Any ideas?

I do not believe Nikon made drivers specifically for Vista, but you can use the solution here to make your own driver "inf" file and install some that will work anyway. Please read this and carefully follow the directions. If you are using 32 bit, use the 32 bit drivers. If 64 bit, then 64 bit drivers, when creating the new inf.

Did you try saving your choice of settings as user settings ? That way, they will serve as defaults for all subsequent scans.

Windows Vista Compatibility

What you need to change is your screen resolution to either 800 x 600 or to 1024 x 768 (in your desktop settings)
What is happening is that your Lexmark all-in-one center doesn't think your monitor can handle the program (or something to that effect).
You will NOT have to restart your computer either.
Just restart your Lexmark All-In-One program and you can start scanning.

I do have three nikon 5000ed scanners running for 18 hours a day in my company. I encountered this problem a lot. Nikon service center charged me for changing a power supply unit in the past: that was not the fault in my oppinion; It could be either a software or hardware fault.
I dedicated a page on my website for fixing and performing maintainance on the Nikon 5000ED scanners.

This information and inside pictures of the Nikon 500ED scanner could be found at
