Question about Computers & Internet

P4 PC with Antec power supply won't start when ''cold''.

My PC won't start on its own when cold. When I switch on the power strip and press the ''ON'' button, the fans will turn over, and the hard drive light will light for about one second. Then everything goes dead, except the power light.

I have found that blowing hot air from a hair dryer into the back of the power supply for about 10 seconds before turning on the power strip computer is all that's necessary for a normal start, but I'm tired of having to do this.

I operate the computer in a room that is about 67 degrees F.
I'm on my second power supply, which is an Antec Neo HE550. The previous power supply behaved in the same way, only it didn't take a hair dryer to start. It only took a two or three attempts before it finally started.

My motherboard is an Intel D865PERL, and I'm operating with Windows XP, two hard drives, one floppy drive and one DVD ROM drive.

550 Watts should be enought to get all this stuff going with no problem on the first try.

To Mr. Tech Geek: The power strip is ruled out as the problem because I could have the power strip switch on and switch on the PC's power at the PC's power supply and still have the problem. I have a volt meter and have measured the 5 and 12 Volt levels. They are right on the money. Yes, I have a video card.

I have an Antec Truepower 2.0 TPII-430. This power supply provides power to the fans but when I push the computer power-up button, nothing happens. I installed another similar power supply and everything...

Test it. Unplug the molex connector from the mothrboard. You can use a wire or a paper clip to test it to power on. You will connect (short) pin 14 to and ground pin. (diagram here) For example, put one end of the paper clip into pin 14, and the other end into 13, 15, or 16. If the power supply turns on and fan running then maybe a problem with the front panel switch on the computer case.
P.S. make sure you unplug all other leads to drives before doing this.

It is best you replace this power supply.
These power supplies have dangerous voltages inside the unit and if you do not have electronic knowledge, any mistakes you make can be fatal.

Cooling fan for antec power supply pp 303xp does not come on when computer is switched on. Is this a replaceable item or do I have to buy a new power supply?

I THINK I REMEMBER reading that Antec had introduced a feature on some of their psu s where essentially the fan(s) were thermally controlled - if the psu was not working very hard it remained cool and the fan remained off but as the psu got warm with additional load it gradually increased fan speed. Perhaps this the issue you are seeing and nothing is wrong ?
PSU's are generally difficult to open and contain few accessible parts. some you can actually change the fan. I don't know about yours though.

I agree with you about the power supply being faulty. Unfortunately FixYa is not affiliated with Antec nor sells or service any computer components.
You need to contact the supplier who sold you the power supply or contact Antec.

How can I test my Antec True 380sp is working properly

Would you like to do a full scale test or just see if it turns on?

Just to see if it turns on just hotwire it!

For a full scale test you need to buy one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&Description=power%20supply%20tester&bop=And&ActiveSearchResult=True&Order=PRICE

Or if you have the patience you can use a multimeter.

P4 PC with Antec power supply won't start when cold

I haven't heard of a sensor that keeps it from starting when too cold. Usually in electronics, if it is a cold problem, there is a cold solder joint somewhere. When you apply heat, the joint solder expands enough to make contact and once electricity is flowing, the joint stays heated due to the resistance provided by the cold joint. Since the heat is applied to the power supply, I would say that the power supply is the problem again. If the power supply is still under warranty, I would exchange it or get my money back and go with a different name brand since you've experienced power supply problems with another model.

I replaced my power supply with a new Antec 650

Let give it a try.
Turn off your computer and unplug it from main supply. Remove the battery for cmos bios. wait half an hour. insert battery again and reset the cmos through jumpers. Plug the main supply and start your computer.
May be it can help you.
