Air condition freezing up

I have a bryant ac that is freezing up.The filters are clean the evap is clean. It does not freeze consistently. Also it was pouring water over about 1 month ago. that has stopped and it is discharging outside. It is 110 during the day and about 90 at the ev ening. This happens every year- we have had it serviced and they find nothing wrong- any ideas

Re: air condition freezing up

Make sure the condensate drain is clean and clear of any debris. With the indoor unit off, Remove the inspection panel and pour a gallon mixture of 10% Bleach to Water solution in the drain pan. Do not overflow the pan but check to make sure there is flow to the outside or drain. Clean out the drain hose if you have to. A freezing coil is a sign of either not enough air going across it or not enough charge in the system. Check to make sure all of the return air vents as well as supply vents are in full open and unrestricted. If they are, you will need to have the charge checked. If this turns out good, have your technician install an anti-freeze kit. This kit will temporarly turn off the compressor unit for a short period when the sensor in the kit experiences a freezing condition. Then after a bit, it will turn on the compressor. It may not cool as much as it was, but it may get you thru. Good Luck!

Re: air condition freezing up

Have an HVAC tech recover the refrigerant from the unit an recyle it during the recovery. Remove any old filter dryers installed on the unit and replace with a new one! YES! Braze in new ones! Pull a triple vacume on this sytem down to 500 microns to insure all non-condensables are evacuated from the system. Weight the charge of refrigerant back in and set by superheat readings from the evaporator coil to the compressor! majic number is 40f evap outlet plus 12f to make it around 52-55 at the compressor inlet. Your problem has been restrictions in the refrigeration cycle either in capillary tube with orfice for metering device or a TXV getting cloged with ****! Hope this gets it solved for you!

Suction line and evaporator coil freezing up

Hello, a air conditioning unit will freeze from lack of airflow or low refrigerant charge. Check filters, make sure blower wheel is clean and running at full speed and that evaporator coil is clean. If that checks out good then you will need a technician to come out and attach guages to the unit to check the operatimg preesures, fimd the leak, amd recharge with refrigerant. Many times the ac will leak at the schreader valves.

If i set the temp to low on my window air conditioner can it cause the unit to freeze up

Under some conditions, it could freeze up. High humidity levels can cause the coils to freeze. Not cleaning the air intake filter regularly, can also cause the coils to freeze. However, most window units can not be set below 65 degrees. But, in high humidity, it could freeze at that temp.

If you want to avoid the possibility of the coils freezing, operate a ceiling fan or other small fan as fast as comfortable. This keeps the cool air moving a generates a wind chill that fools your body into thinking it's cooler than it really is. Doing this will keep you from having to turn the AC way down and thus, save on energy cost.

I hope this has helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

My air conditioner cooling coils get frozen approx\.after 2 hrs of running i have showed it to the service boy they first serviced filled gas and even changed the fan motor. but still the problem...

Hello, the evap coil will freeze from either low airflow or low charge. I would clean the coils, check air filter and replace or clean if dirty. If you have a thermometer measure the air entering the ac and the air leaving the ac, the differance should be 15-20 degrees, measure this after cleaning the coils. If it still is below 15 degrees the unit is underchraged.

make sure the filter is clean. make sure the evap is clean. sounds that you may have a defective t-stat or unit is under charged if filter and evap are clean. or you can run a freeze stat or a higher fan speed hope this helps you
