Screen froze-terrible noise-refused to power down

I have a Gateway E475m laptop. Was recently watching hulu and out of nowhere my computer began making a terrible sound and about 3 columns of horizontal lines appeared across the screen (tv episode still visible in the background). The computer would not shut off via the power button, so I resorted to removing the battery. It seems to be working ok now, but any explanations or assistance would be appreciated. thx, swagirl

It is possible that the video card became unstable. It is possible that the card may be on it's way out; keep an eye out for those lines in the future, if they shoe up again plan on replacing your video card

So the gateway laptop i have e475m it won't turn on or no lights when plugged in. The battery will charge when the laptop is plugged in.what the issue and how to fix it

Try removing power supply and main battery. Remove HDD and RAM. Plug in power supply and press ON. It should complain that there is no hardware. If it does, replace one RAM stick at a time and repeat powering up. If now OK replace the HDD. If nothing, the motherboard has issues, possibly GPU.

You can't watch Hulu on a PowerPC iMac G4. You need an Intel processor based Mac to watch Hulu and Netflix.

This is a problem Gateway laptops can suffer from. Try running the laptop without the battery and just plugged into the mains. You may find the laptop will work ok with just a new battery on it but its difficult to say. It can be an expensive gamble as laptop batteries are not cheap.

Whenever I play video or work on my computer for an extended period of time there is a loud and very obnoxious noise that is intermittent. I believe it might be the fan

It is most likely the fan. When doing things like watching flash video (e.g. YouTube or Hulu), it uses a lot of CPU power, thus your fan needs to spin in order to keep your computer from overheating.

My aurora which recently had its motherboard replaced has been shutting down seemingly at random. Sometimes when I'm watching hulu or playing a game.

It's probably heat-related -- start the Windows Task Manager, and minimize it, and then view HULU -- the CPU-meter probably will rise to 100% and stay there. The minimized Task Manager will be a small icon on the bottom-right of your monitor.

The "harder" the CPU works, the hotter it gets.

Be sure that the warm air leaving the back of your tower has some place to go -- don't back your tower directly into a wall, or put it tightly into a computer-desk.

I was watching a movie on my laptop yesterday when the movie froze. So I turned off the computer, now everytime I turn it on, the screen stays black and nothing will come up. I can't get anything to start...

Hi,

If your screnn is not showing up anything, even the BIOS screen while booting up. Then it could have damaged the Graphics card. You'll have to mostly replace *********** board. Your vendor can provide you a replacement price instead of buying a brand new one.

To avoid these scenerios of graphics card buring out, i would suggest to use the laptop keeping on a flat surface, especially not on pillows, bed and lap. Also dont use the laptop always connected to the power adapted. Connect only when the battery goes down. This will increase the battery life too.

Laptop Shuts down to black screen without warning.

it may be over heating !!
turn it on and run it till you hear the fan turn on, then check if there is much air coming out of it.
if not use a vacuum to **** air throw it as you blow hard into the slot that the air should come out of

Screen blank. only pointer shows

It sounds like damaged OS or registry. You need to restore the operating system. Try F8 at reboot and select "Safe Mode".
