Digital tuner not picking up signal

Radio Shack employee here - a lady came in for help, her tv wouldn't find any ntsc digital signal and the ntsc selection in the menu was greyed out - I tried to get ours to work, and encountered the same problem - had a digital antenna hooked up, as did she but to no avail. Is there a trick? The manual doesn't mention anything to remedy the problem - HELP!!!???

If your trying to get digital stations over the air with a standard ntsc tuner it will never happen. The set must be equipped with a ATSC tuner, that's the one that will receive digital signal over the air. (not cable) If you have the tuner in that model then the signal must be very good or it will display "no signal". Give me a model # quick and I will do the homework for you now.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

RCA Guideplus gold gemstar analog or digital

Most of the RCA GuidePlus Gold gemstar TVs worked with analog TV signals (NTSC) only. The Guide+ information was only broadcast in NTSC signals and is no longer being provided. If you can check the date of manufacture of the TV, you can use the size to check if it had an ATSC tuner added if it was made for the US market. 37"+ TVs had to have a digital tuner in second half of 2005. 25" TVs needed to have the ATSC tuner after March, 2006. The next year all TVs had to have a digital tuner.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the model number of the TV, if you would like me to confirm the tuner information on your set.

Cindy Wells
(The RCA F31317 TV with Guide+ was manufactured in 2000 and thus only has a NTSC tuner.)

How do I connect it to my cable? I have a co-axial line (I think) and there is no visible port to plug into!

The ILO 2600 does NOT have an ATSC tuner for the current digital broadcasting.
Note that a slightly later version *might* have come with such.

Later models equipped with it usually have TWO coaxial inputs on the back whereas the original one only has the now obsolete NTSC coaxial input.

There are several possible explanations of what your friend has told you: he may have had a different model or he may have connected it to a cable which was broadcasting in the older analog format already. Or he simply had a different TV with a built-in tuner that can pick the signal.

So first thing I'd check is the number of antenna inputs you have on the back. When there are two the second is usually labelled "DTV".

Second, is there a Comcast cable box somewhere on your end? And if yes then isn't there other outputs to it other than the coaxial cable?

Finally, it is possible to find a digital-to-analog converter on Internet and eBay in particular, but I wouldn't rush doing that. It's practically half the price of a new 32'' LCD TV and you wouldn't be quite happy with the quality anyway.

Will my TV receive digital signals without an external digital converter?

Hi, John.
No your tv is an older standard definition tv with an NTSC tuner..that was the old type tuner for analog stations.
You will need to get an ATSC digital tuner in order to tune in digital broadcasts.

Luckily, you don't have to spend hundreds to get one.
WalMart and several other stores carry inexpensive digital tuner converters that are in the $30-$40 range.

I hope this helps you out on getting stations picked up, as without the converter, your tv would only be good for hooking up a dvd player to it, or for video games.

Good luck tio you, and have a good day.

I have just purchased a Magnavox VHS/DVD recorder/player and cannot hook it up to my TV as my TV only has a coax plug in the back. Someone said I need a tuner. Where do I purchase one and how...

A tuner will only help if you want to record a signal and the DVD/VCR doesn't have a built-in tuner for that broadcast type (ATSC (OTA Digital in the US), NTSC (analog), Clear-QAM (unencrypted digital cable)). What you need is an RF modulator (composite to coax converter). These are available at many stores that sell electronics. The price will depend on the store. Here's one that is $30 at Radio Shack: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103095 . Walmart and Best Buy also list them.

I hope this helps.

How do you get the tv to search for digital channels

I need more info! How old is the television? when you say "standard" do you mean standard definition? CRT or "tube" model?
Older model TVs with the NTSC tuner will NOT pick up the digital over the air signal, you need a TV with ATSC/QAM tuner built in, or a set top box.

I am trying to hook up a digital labs, 19'' lcd tv/dvd combo and when i do the initial channel scan it doesnt pick up anything from the satelite at all, i have hooked them toghther anyway i can think of...

Most HDTVs have ATSC, QAM and NTSC (analog) tuners. It sounds like yours does not have an NTSC (analog) tuner. QAM tuners only pick up digital cable channels. You may need to switch to your cable company's digital service if your not already on it. Call your cable company for further info

Vhf is not picking up signal, no image

Well since all TV is now broadcast in High Definition that might be why you are no longer able to tune in a station. You will need the converter box.

England uses the PAL (Phase ALternate Line) system. The USA is the NTSC and now digital. See if your set has an NTSC setting.

Analog or Digital Tuner in TV?

ATSC is the name given to the new digital signal. NTSC is the current analogue signal. This is the standard name given to the American system of broadcasting.
