I used to be able to watch dvds on my tv using the

I used to be able to watch dvds on my tv using the input channel, but a power surge erased the channel. The remote was lost so I bought a universal remote and it won't program the channel. I hooked up my dvd to the vcr but for some reason it only works on some dvds. How can I get the channel back so I can watch dvd again without using my vcr?
