Question about IBM ThinkPad T21 Notebook

IBM thinkpad A21 won't start up

Hi, I got a Thinkpad A21 in 2003 that was working just fine. In 2006 I bought a new laptop so I wasn't using the A21 anymore.
A year ago I tried to start up the A21 but it just won't. I push the power button and the hardrive & battery lit for a second but then nothing happens. The thing is, sometimes, it starts up! And it works just fime then, but when I turn it off, I have to try 200-1000 times before it works again. It's just frustrating as no one seems to know what the problem is.
The battery is almost dead, I plug it before trying to starting it up.

yes, the ac adapter is working, i used it with another thinkpad and i'm sure it works fine.
it does not have a LED power, but i can see the battery LED lit as if it was charging when I plug it in. though the battery is pretty dead.
    and i don't have a volt meter ^^

I have a ThinkPad A21m that won't boot. It was working fine then just quit. The hard drive light flashes and the battery light goes out for just a second when you press the power button.

Can you verify that your AC Adapter is working?

Does it have a power LED?

Can you put a volt meter on it to make sure it is up to snuff?

Hi have an IBM A21 it will not power up, when pressing the start button the green battery lamp goes off and there is a small flash in the hardisk lamp, and I can here a small "click" the green battery lamp...

If it's not your battery, then it's possible that your motherboard has died (if it was the HD you would at least get the BIOS screen before it stopped). I suggest you take it in to a qualified repair center & ask them to give you an estimate of the repair cost. The A21 is an older model & you may likely be better off investing in a new laptop than fixing the old. Make sure you keep the hard-drive though as you will likely want to get your data from it!

My IBM Thinkpad is not switching on?

The error message relates to the date and time setting in the BIOS, it has a wrong due to a flat BIOS battery. The needs to be replaced and the date and time corrected,
The padlock symbol indicates the laptop's BIOS has been set with a password and you cannot enter and change the BIOS settings without this password.

Replace the BIOS battery with a new one, then boot up and enter your BIOS password, then change the time & date, then save and exit.

Let me start by saying that there are alot supossed or claim to fix fixes for this on the internet. I've tried them all, and the only two fixes for this are replacing the motherboard or replacing the malfunctioning chip on the motherboard that has caused this. The simplest, easiest, and most of the time cheapest sure way to fix this is to replace the motherboard. The other way is to track down the failed chip and have a new on soldiered to the board. Most people can't do this on their own, and if you can find a shop that will do it, they will charge in the hundreds of dollars. There are several A21 motherboards on Ebay for lees than $50, most have the base that is intact, so all you will have to do is swap out the drives, screen, memory, covers, keyboard, and screen. Then tou're up and running again. Here's a couple of links to help. The first is Ebay's A21 motherboard listings, and the second is various manuals for the A21 to help you swap everything out. Doing it yourself isn't that hard and will save you quite a bit of money.

IBM Thinkpad A21m freezes when I click on the icon My Computer

First off this machine wasn't really designed for Windows 98. Here's a couple of links that may help. The first is for a bios update to fix a few system bugs. Keep in mind that the bios are VERY important and you don't want to screw them up, so, either download and create a diskette or download and save to the desktop before running. The second is for A21 drivers. You may want to download any utility drivers that run with Windows 98. Your current drivers may be for 2000 or XP, and may be creating a conflict.

Hi, a problem discirbed to this link apears similar on my old IBM a21

Try updating the BIOS, sounds like there is either a corruption, hardware conflict, or new hardware installed.
