Question about Maxtor OneTouch III 300 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Can a external hard drive with a power supply issue be fixed?

I have a maxtor onetouch III 300gig external hard drive with 275 gig of vital information on it whose power just stop working. The chord is good because i tested it with another hard drive and it works fine. My problem is from the internal power supply or switch and hard drive will not turn on. What direction do i turn with a problem like this.

There isn't really any user friendlly part in there, it's just a hard drive in an enclosure. See if the warantee covers it. I have a Maxtor 1 terrabite drive and they have a pretty liberal return policy

The data on the drive should hopefully be safe as it sounds like it is the drive enclusure that has failed here (not the drive)

your data should be intact if the drive hasn't failed.

however to access the data is a different matter, as I am unsure how maxtor deal with this, to do it manually you would put the drive into a working enclosure or connect it to a functioning HDD adapter (for your drive type)

however to do this the drive would need to be removed from the enclosure (voiding the warranty)

hope this helps

I need driver for maxtor onetouch III

Probably more than just a driver, but Maxtor is part of Seagate, so you should be able to find driver on Seagate's website. I had a 500gb Seagate that failed within the warranty. I didn't want to send it in with loss of all data, so I took it apart. Wala, drive was ok, the interface had failed. If the driver doesn't help Good chance power supply or interface is the problem and drive is ok.

My maxtor one touch is not found on my white macbook

Several things could be happening here:
1. your electronic controller in the hard case has failed.
2. you didn't properly disconnect the external hard drive in Windows > with the
"Safely Remove Hard ware and eject Media" in the task bar.
3. if you have a power supply to the USB drive it may have a damaged power connector or not supply proper power to the device.

Maxtor is now owned by Seagate, and yes, you can go to http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/installation_assistance/installation_instructions/external_drives_&_personal_servers/ot2
Hope that helps, i am trying to get my Maxtor External II working now too, I think it's a power supply, cause it wants to keep installing the driver, but the driver is already there. Hmmm anybody?

One hard drive failure mode is a power circuit short. Contact MAXTOR support on their web site for a possible warranty replacement. BTW, SEAGATE owns MAXTOR now.

USB CONNECT ONE FOR POWER+DATA ? AND THE OTHER POWER ONLY?

It sounds like your USB ports just aren't putting out enough power for this device. Did the drive come with an external power supply? If so, does it work when you use the external power supply?
