Remove the emachine/PC ANGEL RECOVERY SOFTWARE

We were struck by a virus on 1 April 2009. We borrowed an emachine disk to Recover the system. It took approx 16 hours to run the emachine/angel software. The emachine logos appears on the desk top whenever we log on. We would like to remove all traces of emachines/angels software.
Is there a source on line to download a Recovery Disk for Windows XP/Dell Dimension E310. Microsoft will not assist and Dell charges 45.00 an hour for a "t\Technical Help" tele call.

PC angel isn't installed as such it uses the desktop.ini to load its software.

desktop.ini is used to by windows to customise the view of individal folders in windows.

if you know how go to command prompt
type in;
attrib -h -r -s -a c:\folder\*.* /d /s
( replace c:\folder with the drive/folder of the protected folder )
next type in
del c:\folder\desktop.ini
( Again replace c:\folder with the drive/folder of the protected folder)

Bye bye protection for that folder

Try reinstalling a borrowed Retail XP (the one boxed). Once installed with the CD serial key, change the key with the one in the label affixed to your laptop. The XP version MUST be the same as the sticker. You may activate or call Microsoft explaining why you had to reinstall. Anti-Piracy 101.

Trying to restore emachine to factory settings.. When I go to emachines recovcery management, I get something saying "Empowering Technology is not ready. try again Later"

This is usually a sign that the partition on your hard drive that the recovery media is located in is corrupt. 3 reasons for this:
  1. bad recovery partition from the factory (bad image)
  2. Virus or spyware corrupted files to prevent usage which would prevent you from removing the problem with a recovery.
  3. Hard Drive issues (physical sections of the drive going bad.)
If you created recovery media, use those to recover your system. If you didn't, you may have to purchase recovery media from gateway for your model to recover the computer.

While it may cost you $30 to $50 dollars for the recovery media, it is a lot cheaper than the alternative of getting a tech to try to repair the partition or track down the virus or spyware.

The other advantage of recovery media is if the problems you were experiencing are hard drive related, you can put a replacement drive in and use those recovery disks to get your system working again.

How do i restore the emachine

Remove any DVDs or CDs from the optical drives and then unplug all peripheral devices except for the keyboard and mouse.

Click the "Windows" button and then type "eMachines recovery management" into the search box. Click on "eMachines recovery management" in the results list and then click the "Restore" tab.
Click "Password Settings" and then type a new password into the text box.
Click "OK" and then click "Restore System to Factory Default".

Type the recovery password into the "Password" text box and then click "OK". Click "Next" To start the recovery process.

Click "Finish" and then wait for your computer to restart.
This procedure could take several minutes. Once your computer has restarted, you'll be prompted to create a new user account, enter the date and time and set up the internet settings.

or if you are running XP

If you set your machine back to eMachines factory settings, it might help you for a short while but if you don't have effective virus protection your problems will return in short order.

You should get rid of this virus with an effective virus remover.

You can run Bitdefender's free online scan which doesn't need to be downloaded http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

If you know when you got the virus, you can do a system restore to a time before the virus was on your system. This article tells you how to run it from safe mode http://bertk.mvps.org/html/safemode.html

Your best protection in general is a complete internet security suite such as Bitdefender or Norton internet security 2009.

If you need to totally rebuild your system and you don't have a recovery disk, contact eMachines to get one.

You might also try a Windows repair install if you have the operating system disk. Follow the directions here for XP http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepa...

I want to burn recovery disks for a dell studio 540. There is no software from dell installed that will enable me to do this. How do I burn recovery disks for a machine purchased before April 2009?

I am not sure what you are trying to recover but if it is just the system start-up system, you should be able to do this through the DOS operating system.

I have a eMachines T3418 desktop, and like this post it crashed. I recovered using my Windows XP disk, which created a recovery partition and saved my files. Now I am up and operating with factory...

If you did a system recovery, it may have told you that it would save your data, but it wouldn't be in the recovery partition. That partition is meant for system files only and it isn't too large.
It could also have told you that your hard drive would be reformatted and the system returned to it's new condition. This means all data was wiped from the hard drive.

So--the answer is: It depends on what you agreed to when you did the system recovery.

Big fix requires attention

How to fix bigfix virus This problem can be solved manually by deleting all registry keys and files connected with this software, removing it from starup list and unregistering all corresponding DLLs. Additionally missing DLL's should be restored from distribution in case they are corrupted by bigfix. To fix this threat, you should:

1. Kill the following processes in task manager and delete the appropriate files from the programs folder:
1.Bigfix
2.BIGFIX.EXE
3.Alexa
4.Alexa.exe

Run a good antivirus program and remove what is found.

Angel repeatedly asks for discs to do a system recover

Are you the original owner? If you did not make a set of recovery discs, you may have to go to emachines and order them. They are about $20. I recently refurbished an emachine and that is what we had to do.
You will need the model number and serial number. They cannot download it to you either.
