Is it a valid version of Windows? If not the Authentic Windows validation update might have disabled normal function of the OS. Otherwise this may be serious damage due to spyware. Spyware software like SPYWAREDETECTOR are about $30 per year and work pretty well. Free ones are often 'get what you pay for' quality - crap. You may also have to use the windows disc to run a repair to fix the damage done once the spyware is gone. Or reinstall Windows.

The desktop is empty

First a question; you say you only have the background and cursor does that mean literally everything else is gone including the start button in the lower left and the task manager in the lower right? Or do you mean that all your icons, shortcuts, folders and files you had on your desktop are gone?

"My Handheld PC" and "Recycle Bin" icons disappeared

This problem is experienced after following performance suggestions found in third-party documentation, on web sites, or in newsgroups. These suggestions instruct users to remove all folders from the desktop of Handheld PC Pro device in order to speed screen-repaint rates. Applying these same steps on a Handheld PC 2000 device causes all desktop icons to disappear. Microsoft has documented this issue (in Q289674): http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q289/6/74.ASP To restore the My Handheld PC and Recycle Bin icons on the device, follow these steps: 1. Tap Start, tap Programs, and then tap Windows Explorer. 2. Tap the My Documents folder, tap Send To on the File menu, and then tap Desktop as Shortcut. 3. "Soft" reset the MobilePro. The My Handheld PC and Recycle Bin icons should return to the desktop. Note that you must have at least one folder or shortcut on the desktop in addition to the My Handheld PC and Recycle Bin icons, or else the problem will recur.
