Question about Dell 1800FP Monitor

1 Answer

Dell monitor attached to Inspiron 1520 runs landscape (sideways)

The external Dell monitor displays in landscape mode (on its side) unless the laptop monitor is also on, in which case the external monitor shows the "right way up" same as the laptop monitor. How do I change the external monitor to display correctly when the laptop monitor is off?

Thanks in advance.

Go to control panel select display, change display settings, then go to the drop down by orientation and select landscape or portrait depending on whether you have your screen turned tall or wide. If tall select portrait, if wide then select landscape.

Dell 1703fpi

Dell 1703fpi LCD monitor,

http://philadelphia-pa.americanlisted.com/computers/dell-1703fpi-17-lcd-monitor-vgadvi-usb-hub-50-phoenixville_21225579.html

I got that part Dan.........

What I need is what Model Number of Dell Inspiron it is.
This is on the Bottom of the Inspiron laptop.

Why?
Because I do not know if the Dell Inspiron laptop you have, has a DVI port, or a VGA port; for an external monitor......

Generic information while I wait.........

Example of Digital Visual Interface port, and corresponding cable,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

Example of Video Graphics Array port,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

Can be on the side, or back of laptop.

Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect the matching video cable from the external monitor; to the laptop.
Now turn the laptop on.....

By factory default settings, the display should now show on the external monitor. (Dell 1703fpi)
No?

There are at least 3 display options available;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external monitor
3) External monitor ONLY

Press, and hold down on the Fn key. (Usually 2nd key from left on bottom row of keyboard)
AT THE SAME time tap once on the Display Toggle-Over key.

Which one is that? Dunno.
Laptop model number was not stated.
For a Dell Inspiron though, it's usually the F8 key.
(F1 through F12 keys at the top of the keyboard)

Hold the Fn key down, and at the same time tap once on the F8 key.
Still no?
Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the F8 key.

IF, F8 is the correct key for Display Toggle-Over, and there is no display on the external Dell 1703fpi; then I suggest you have a problem with the video chipset; on the motherboard.......

Awaiting reply in a Comment.

joecoolvette

Jst a few months back i had bought dell inspiron laptop n it was working on very well but suddely i got to a vertical green line on the right hand side of my laptop screen.... could you please tell me the...

You should have a video plug on the side of your laptop. It might be a 9 pin plug or a 15 pin plug. You can attach an external monitor or LCD monitor to this plug. If the green line displays on the external monitor then your video circuit on your laptop is faulty. If the line is not present on external display then your laptop LCD display panel is defective.

The creen on my laptop is rotated sideways how do I fix it everything on my screen is sideways and i need it to be up and down so i can read my screen right side up on my laptop computer

Based on your brief description, I think your problem is correctable in the control panel under monitor settings. Depending on your operating system (XP, Vista, Windows 7) you will need to find the monitor settings and look for the advanced section for the Nvidia Video Card. In there you should find a setting to flip the monitor view between Portrait and Landscape. The settings may be named differently, but there will likely be a graphic representation to show you the different settings available.

I have one whitw and blue line on display of my dell inspiron 1520

Please try attaching an external Monitor to your notebook and if the white line still appears then there is something wrong with your display adapter integrated on your notebook's motherboard if not then its your LCD display. Check your Service Tag in the support and see if your warranty still active so you can have either of the 2 replace.

Want to connect my Dell laptop to my ViewSonic monitor-help!

Just connect the VGA 15 pin cable from the monitor to the VGA port on the laptop.
Turn on the monitor then the computer.
Hopefully Windows will find new hardware and ask you to run the multiple display wizard.
If the external display doesn't automatically turn on then you need to hit a keystroke combination. FN+ the key on the top row that has an icon that looks like a picture of a monitor. Usually an F key.
This keystroke combination switches between LCD, external Monitor and both.
When you get video on the external monitor, then you can get into the display control panel and change the resolutions and display modes to your liking!
Good luck!

You need to click on either the ATI, or NVIDIA icon in toolbar and select Rotate, and rotate it back to where you want it, make sure you choose correct Monitor, the external one is usually No. 2.

Dell 1520 , on start up screen goes black.... top right hand corner of pc is hot. backlight ?invertor?has the screen got a built in ivertor?? then maybe new screen??? help please....

Hi:
The top right corner of your laptop is where the CPU and heatsink/ fan is located. If you can hook up an external monitor to your laptop, you can toggle to it with the function key and the lcd/CRT key. If you get a good display, then you have a bad inverter or possibly the LCD, but you can't do too much more troubleshooting,

Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop screen does not light up

In Safe mode drivers, in your case the video one, aren't loaded. Uninstall the one that you have now. If it's the same then probably it's a hardware problem. To be sure boot from a Linux Live-CD like http://www.pclinuxos.com/  and press the Escape key - this way you will see the boot-log in real time, look for error messages.

Stand alone monitor won't come on after Vista automatic downloads

I'm just "guessing" here, but when the updates are installed, you may have to restart the computer. On a laptop, unless you go into the control panel and designate which monitors are installed, it reverts to the built-in monitor and you have to use the Fn and whichever function key controls the monitor assignment.
Yes, there should be a way to permanently tell the machine that the external monitor is the primary one. I think (since I don't run Vista here) that you would get into the control panel and the display settings and designate the attached monitor as the primary. I'd be interested to know if this works. Be sure when you go to the display properties that you right-click on the external monitor and choose "attached".
Anyway, give that a try.
