can't find a reset button on bottom. can't turn the gps off. the slide button on top is not responding at all. Gps is stuck on and can't turn off and won't unlock either. when screen is touched, it keeps saying screen locked, slide button to the left. When I do this nothing is happening.

  • dj1771 Apr 14, 2009

I have reset several times. I can't turn off the gps with slide button. the minute the screen is touched it says screen locked. I have tried the slide button to the left for 8 seconds. nothing is helping. What else can I do?

  • dj1771 Apr 14, 2009

it is in the center postition and still not responding. I have had it in every postition there is!

  • dj1771 Apr 15, 2009

The battery did run out and the problem has been the same. Locked screen. Could the slide button be broke or not making contact? Because like I said ,I could not turn the gps off with that slide button.

  • dj1771 Apr 15, 2009

I got to the"Do you want to erase all data" screen and pressed yes but no response. the only way to get it off that screen is to disconnect the power supply and then back to same locked screen problem. Guess we buy a new gps.

Your GPS is got hanged in the standby mode.so nothing is happening.but many a times it automatically gets resolved by doing nothing.as many of my customers have faced this problem and some of them have solved this problem by doing nothing it gor solved automatically.but this problem occurs because there is a component called IC the name of the ic is memory ic if that ic gets some poroblem the device goes in standby mode.so it just gets hold.many a times doing on/off pressing unlock button several number of times makes it release from that hold.but as per the advise if for now that you want to use the gps its advisable to go for new gps device.there is no other option to make this gps repaired because that ic is not available locally and the company does not provides this ic.and this is very rare problem out of 1000 users 1 get this unsolvable locked problem in gps.
thanks.
keep updated.thank you for using fixya.

Does the touchscreen work at all?
Try to reset the gps: Press and hold the reset button on the bottom of the unit for several seconds. OR Slide the power key to the left and hold it for 8 seconds.

Also try to calibrate the screen.

  1. Turn the unit off
  2. turn the unit on and slide the power key to the left and hold it for 30 seconds until the calibration screen appears (white screen with press dot)

    Here you go

  • Ekse Apr 14, 2009

To unlock the screen slide the power key to the center position.

  • Ekse Apr 14, 2009

Okay, let the battery run out, that will reset it. A faster solution might be to disconnect the battery but I don't recommend it as it might void the warranty.

  • Ekse Apr 15, 2009

If the reset button doesn't work either the issue could be more serious but yes it could be a broken switch, does it seem to move freely as in it wouldn't be connected to anything? is there resistance?

The nuvi 200 is discontinued I'm not sure if repairs would be available. We would probably have to attempt at do it at home fix.

Heres one more reset Id like you to attempt

Do you have warranty on the garmin? how do you feel about taking it apart?

Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.

    1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power (if you can't then skip to step 2, or we might need to let the battery run out of disconnect it.)
    2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
    3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
    4. Release the power button when the device powers ON

      • You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?

    5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
    6. Touch Yes

The device will automatically reset. Please follow the on screen prompts on the nüvi and when completed place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

My grand daughter locked up my garmin nuvi 200. She does not know the pin number she input. Now I can not use it. Can you help?

You can take it to the location where your granddaughter locked it, and it will unlock by itself (this is called the security location). It will then unlock, and you can reset the PIN.

Otherwise, you have to send it in to Garmin with the original receipt and they will unlock it for you. There is no master password.

Nuvi 200 froze in middle of trip reset with button on bottom and now all i get is a screen that says garmin and thats all

Use the USB cord that came with your Garmin. Plug it into the side of the Garmin and the other end into the USB port on your computer. Go to www.garmin.com. Look for downloads of your NUVI 200. Download the latest update and see if that solves the problem.

    Unlocking garmin nuvi 200

I've been trawling for unanswered questions; this information may be too late for you (or perhaps it may help you resurrect a useless machine which you have put away) but it will certainly help others searching for advice with the same problem.

You have Garmin Lock activated on your nuvi: there are only two ways you can unlock it. There is no hack, crack, bypass or any other reset option.

    1. Enter the PIN code (but you clearly don't have it or you wouldn't be reading this).

    2. Take the unit to the Security Location you chose when activating Garmin Lock: it will then unlock without the PIN code and you can then either reset the PIN or disable Garmin Lock. The Security Location should not be the owner's home address, but many owners ignore this recommendation. Many owners choose their workplace or a close friend or relatives address for this purpose.

If neither option works then your unit is useless unless you send it to Garmin with proof of purchase. Garmin charge for the service and if your maps are not up to date then it's really a waste of money as the investment would be better spent on a new unit with current mapping.

I hope that you manage to either fix your problem using my advice or at least can decide whether to abandon the unit and buy another.

I just bought my Garmin Nuvi 200 and just stays black screen?

My Garmin 200 did the same on two occasions. On the bottom to the left of the serial number is a tiny reset button. Press that using a pencil point and all will be reset. And you don't lose any map data, so don't worry!
