Hi tewsahn,
The waste ink "tank" is actually a set of felt pads under the path where the printhead carrige runs. One narrow strip pad is clearly visible along the centre of the path when the lid is openned and is easily removed, but the major absorbers are lower down. The pads could be cleaned and/or replaced with new but it is a very messy job (ink stains!) and requires the printer to be dismantled - not too difficult for a mechanically minded person and I did not experience any tricky reassembly realignment problems. After I finished this task, I eventually found the Service Manual at:
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/canon
If this process is carried out successfully you are advised to "reset the Canon i550 waste ink counter" (do a Google search - many guide postings), before continuing to use the printer again.

An alternative solution, if the printer is still responding, would be to open the printer case (separate the top and bottom halves), find and redirect the two waste ink drain hoses from the suction pump (located under the printhead parking area ) from going into the waste pads, into two extension hoses (that you must provide) and feed out through the back of the case into an external waste ink container - you will still need to reset the waste ink counter because the printer will eventually reach the full waste count. Do a Google search on "waste ink conversion/collection kits", associated with using "continuous flow ink systems"/(CISS) for more help.

Hope you are successful if you try this repair.

Canon i550-turn on-orange/green 8x then long green

From the Canon website:

Issue: Alarm / Power light flashes orange 8 times consecutively (Waste Ink Nearly Full Error)
Solution: Ink Absorber Replacement Options i550

Ink Absorber Replacement Options

This printer has an ink absorber that takes in ink during the printing and print head cleaning processes. The cleaning process is necessary in order to keep the print head nozzles from becoming clogged. Over the life of the printer, the amount of ink that the ink absorber has absorbed is calculated by the printer. Eventually, after substantial use, the printer will enter an error condition when the ink absorber is nearly full. At this point, printing is still possible by pressing the <Resume> button on the printer. To protect the printer from damage, you will not be able to print at all once the ink absorber is full.

Canon recommends having the printer serviced before the absorber becomes full. We are aware that there are many "do-it-yourself" Web sites that offer instructions for making this repair. Replacing the ink absorber is a complicated and potentially messy procedure. Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed, the ink absorber counter must be reset. Be aware that if you attempt this procedure, it is at your own risk.

When i turn my printer on the light flashes green once and then orange 5 times. cannot get past this stage - any ideas?

Here are all the flashing explanations:

Two flashes: Out of paper or paper feed error

Reload the paper correctly and press the RESUME/CANCEL button.

Three flashes: Paper jam

If paper has jammed in the printer, clear the jam, reload the paper in the printer correctly and press the RESUME/CANCEL button.

See Paper Jams

Four flashes: Empty ink tank

If you press the RESUME/CANCEL button, it will continue printing with an empty ink tank. After printing is finished, replace the ink tank immediately. If you continue printing with an empty ink tank, it may cause damage to your printer.

Refer to your Quick Start Guide for instructions on how to replace an ink tank.

Five flashes: No print head installed/Defective print head

Install the print head. Also, ensure that the protective tape has been removed.

If reinstalling the print head does not solve the problem, replace it with a new one. Contact the Customer Care Center.

Eight flashes: Waste ink tank almost full

The printer has a built-in waste ink tank for the ink used during print head cleaning. Eight flashes indicates that the waste ink tank is nearly full. Press the RESUME/CANCEL button to cancel the error so you can continue printing. Before the waste ink tank becomes completely full, contact the Customer Care Center.
