When I try to boot up my Dell Latitude /D500 laptop.. I get the following blue Screen error message: The error message says: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent...

That error is usually caused by corruption in the Operating System files. You don't mention what version of windows you are running so will try to walk you through options with XP, Vista and 7. Vista and Windows 7 are the same steps to hopefully resolve this issue.

Windows XP:
You may need your Installation Disc for these procedures. First however, try doing this:
Turn the machine on and start tapping F8, and keep tapping. You should come to a black screen with several options on it. The top 2 options will be Safe Mode and Safe Mode With Networking. Select one of those, it doesn't matter which. When you highlight the option using your Up or Down arrow hit enter.
It will take you to the list of Operating Systems Should just be the primary system choice. Look and see if it also lists the Recovery Console. If it does arrow down to it and hit enter. If it does not then you will need the Dell Installation Disc for your operating system handy. Put it in the CD drive and during boot up hit F12 to get the boot menu or whatever option it shows for it on your screen. Select CD and hit enter. It will load several files and come to the first setup screen hit the R for Recovery Console. Once in the console you will need to select the windows installation option by entering the number of the choice. Hit enter.
If it asks for the administrator's password, just hit enter, by default it is blank.
You should see a command prompt with a blinking cursor like: C:\> and the cursor blinking next to it. Type in this command: chkdsk /R and hit enter it should start showing it scanning your drive for errors. Let it run all the way through and watch the results as it will tell you it has found one or more corrupted files and repaired them. At that point you will have a blinking cursor again waiting a command. Just type in the word EXIT and hit enter. it will reboot. should go on into windows.

For Vista and windows 7, turn the machine on and tap F8, and when you get to the boot options screen it should default to Repair Computer. Hit enter and follow the screen instructions.
If you do not have the Repair Computer option on that screen, then you will need the Installation Disc for this as well. Put it in the cd drive and select the Boot Menu option. When it gets to the Installation screen using the CD you will see an option to Repair Computer. Select it and follow the screen prompts.

You will get to a Advanced System Repair screen. When you see it click on Command Prompt.

When you get the black command window type in: chkdsk /R and hit enter. It will warn you that you cannot do this on a locked drive. It will ask you if you want to dismount the drive by choosing Y for yes or N for no. Type Y and hit enter. It will take over from there and scan for and repair any corrupted files it finds. When it is done type in: EXIT and hit enter and then click on Restart Computer.

That should fix you up.

My computer is running slow even with cleanup. When I turn on the hard drive it take forever to come up.

There are a lot of times that the startup files bog down a system, and there are a lot of these files and programs that just don't need to start when Windows lets shut em down until we actually need them.

Click on the start utton on your task bar, in the text box or if you have an earlier operating system it is the "Run" command box. Type

Hit enter, the window that comes up, will have several tabs at the top, the first tab is the "General" tab and that is the one that comes up, now click on the "Selective Startup" button. Now above, click on the "Startup" tab. Click the button that says "disable all". Now go through the list of programs and check only the ones that have to do with virus ware or malware tools etc. Click apply and ok, the system will want to reboot at this point, go ahead. When the system reboots, it will give you a popup about msconfig, just click ok and exit the popup. Your machine should have started faster with just that tweak. If you need another program to start with Windows, just go back in a check the box associated with the program and hit apply. Good luck

  • Hi, you can go into the "Control Panel" and make changes to the Power Saving Options, or Energy Saving. First from the "Start Menu" in the [Start Search] window, type: power, next scroll to find the "Short-cut' listing for {Power Options}, click on it to go to the next window. You'll be able to adjust the "Power Options," (Sleep, "Awake," or Hiberate, if available). "Let me know how things worked out for you by giving a "helpful rating"

My presario 500 wont even turn on

try running it in safemode and if you have recently added any new hardware or software that may be causing your problem uninstall it while you are in safemode.

As the computer boots press F8 to enter safe mode. If this is successful then everything on the screen will look big, ignore that for now. uninstall anything that may be causing the problem. If you have not loaded anything lately, then while in safe mode restore your computer to an earlier date when you know that everything was working okay.

You can do this by going to Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore. Then choose a date when you know that things were okay and press restore. You computer will restore to the date you selected and it will reboot. If asked to whether you want to start windows normally after the boot then select that option.

I hope this helps

Computer making noise

Monitor clicks, pops, or makes other noises. Issue: Monitor clicks, pops, or makes other noises.
Cause: This issue could be caused by any of the below possibilities:
  1. Monitor degaussing.
  2. Monitor changing resolution.
  3. Monitor syncing with the video card.
  4. Monitor warming up.
Solution: Noise when turned on or off It is normal for standard computer CRT monitors to make a click, pop, crackle, hum, buzz, or other type of noises when they are first turned on or turned off.
Noise when monitor goes into standby mode When the monitor enters a "standby mode" or "power savings mode" this is similar to the monitor being turned off. It is completely normal for the monitor to make a noise when the monitor enters this mode.
Noise when opening Microsoft Windows or other operating system or when opening a game When a computer opens its operating system, for example, a computer opening Microsoft Windows or when a user runs a computer game it is very common that the monitor will need to switch its resolution of the operating system or game. When switching resolutions it is normal for the computer monitor to make some type of noise and/or for the computer monitor to flick or flash.
Noise during normal operation If the computer monitor click, pops, or flashes while it is being used this is not normal operation. It is very likely that the monitor may be failing or a component within the monitor has already failed and could also potentially be a fire hazard. We highly recommend that the monitor be repaired, replaced, and/or looked at by a qualified technician.
Additional information:
  • See document CH000302 for additional information and other noises that may come from
