I think you need new brushes for the motor and that is why the unit keeps cutting out on you.

    Hi Barbara,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14. If your machine has suction through the wand, but not through the cleaner head, it's likely that there's a blockage somewhere in the cleaner head. The filter may also need a wash.

The easiest way to locate and remove any blockages is to follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

This should resolve the issue - however, if you'd like further assistance, please call us free on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US) so we can help.

    Kind regards,

    SOURCE: DC17 suction motor stopped

It could be that your cyclone needs to be replaced. Depending on how the unit was cleaned (the cyclone in particular). Some people who service these machines wash the cyclone with out completely dismantling it, they just fill it with water and shake stuff out of it. This can cause debris inside the cyclone to become lodged causing clogs. If after checking for clogs and if your changeover valve is working (the piece that moves back and forth on the side of the machine when you pull the handle back to vacuum carpets) and the machine is in the upright posistion and the hose doesn't work, then you probably have a cyclone problem.

it is a armature problem common to makita products
replacing one armature with a new one does not solve the problem as the fault is a design fault
probably armature not wired heavy enough for continuous running
consider replacing it with a better brand that enables continuous operation

My Hoover self propelled wind tunnel was working great until a couple of days ago when it started shutting on and off while vacuuming. I thought it was the outlet but when I plugged it into two different outlets it did the same thing. Then finally yesterday it just stopped working it won't even turn on when plugged in. I thought it was the switch but it is not. Is it the motor? Has the motor burned out? Do I need to buy a new one? Help!!

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.

I think you are right, if it is not the switch then it would be the motor. Does it smell bad like a burning smell? If so it is definitely the motor and then @ that point you may want to get an estimate for motor replacement, and keep in mind of what you spent on the vacuum versus what the cost of repair might be. My own rule of thumb is if it cost more than ½ of the price I paid for it then you have to decide – do I want to pay the repaired cost for the vacuum or do I want to purchase a new one. Just a suggestion... You may want to check with your local vac dealer. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. I had the same exact problem. The little plastic thing that hangs down is too light; my husband taped a quarter to it securely, and that solved that problem! Of course, this is January 2008, so I hope you haven't suffered with this problem all this time. Mweddell.
