When talking on the handset I sometimes hear a clicking noise, like a wire is making good contact and then partial contact. Sometimes I hear dialing, like someone else is home and picked up an extention and didn't know I was using it. Sometimes the signal breaks up more than 25 feet from the base, other times it reaches up to 35 feet before it breaks up.
I have a Uniden TRU9460 with additional handsets. Two of them are the TWX waterproof.
Re: clicking on handsets, loss of signal strength.
We decided to remove each handset, one at a time, from the system to see if we could determine if any of them were defective and maybe the cause of our problems. We took handset #1 and removed its battery. We continued to have the clicking and other noise. We put the battery back in handset #1 and removed the battery of handset #2. Immediately we noticed we did not experience the noise and clicking problems. We have concluded that handset #2 is defective. To verify we will keep handset #2 out of service for a week. At the end of a week we will reinstall the battery and if we have noise and clicking we have verified handset #2 is defective, the cause of our noise and clicking and needs to be replaced. Just to be on the safe side we will continue testing each additional handset to verify if any others are defective.

There is not a way to make the handset get a better signal, other than constructing a tower in your home area. There are some handsets that have the capability to get a better signal, but they will vary from brand to brand. Nokia is one of the worlds most trusted and reliable handset manufacturers. What you can do, is to have someone else that has the same service provider as you, come out to your area, and see what kind of signal they have, and if they have a bette signal, then you may want to think about getting another handset, and if they have the same handset, and same service provider, then you may have a defective handset, and may just need to swap it out.
Not using the handset for several months would have allowed corrosion to develop on the charging contacts. You have to use cotton buds and a strong solvent to clean the charging contacts.
Alternately, it may be that the battery is already dead and no longer would accept a charge. These are plug-in types and are replaceable. Incidentally, it is also possible that the corrosion developed on the battery connector contacts themselves.
Indication of corrosion would be dull colored contacts with bits of flakes - clean to make shiny again; the connector corrosion would be wet powdery greenish substance on the wires or connector from the battery.

At 20 ft line of sight, you should have perfect reception with most any cordless phone.
The fuzzy signal can indicate: 1. A weak signal between base and handset. 20 ft line of sight should have a good strong signal. Your handset may be defective. Or, your handset battery may be weak. Your base unit may be defective.
2. You may be experiencing RFI Interference. Is the base unit next to any other electronic devices? If it is next to a wireless router or some other wireless device, it may be overloaded by the nearby signal (even if on a different frequency)
I've got a 5 year old Panasonic 5.8 Ghz cordless phone connected to my VoIP box. I just tested it from about 25 ft away from the base unit in another room with a wall in between and my reception is perfect.
I did the same test with my Panasonic DECT 6.0 phones (1.9 GHz). The first handset is slightly fuzzy, but otherwise good signal. The 2nd handset was perfectly quiet with good strong signal. So, there is a difference between two identical handsets connected to the same base unit. This indicates to me that one handset is better tuned than the other. Nothing I can do about that but get a new 2nd extension cordless handset. Sometimes, it's just luck of the draw
This can be due to poor meshing of the base and handset , a poor signal strength that tends to pick up stray EMI signals. Make sure that the antennae of the Base phone is tight and up . Check the voltage to the base phone - if adapter is faulty.
Also check the handset for any loose fittings on the antennae.
If the problem does not resolve then you need technical help to check if the operating frequency or the signal processing is weak and faulty on the base unit. Best you can remove base unit and look for any loose links in RF section or shielding faults in this section that picks up stray signals.
Sounds like contact trouble, try some alcohol on a q tip and wipe the contacts on the hand set, unplug the wire and clean both ends well, or replace the curlie cord from a phone in your house, and see if it changes things.
ours has the same problem. We believe it is the sigal from the wireless router (do you have one of those?) and it is interfering with the signal from the telephone handset to the charger. I would recommend trying to switch channels on your telephone handset. Push the channel button until it becomes clear. Hope this helps.
I looked up the battery specs for your phone. They are 3 X 200mah= 600mah battery packs. They should last 8 hrs talk time with the headsets. This style of battery pack in my experience only last about 1 1/2years and sometimes longer and "sometimes" shorter...much shorter. I bet you never had problems when you first got them. Basicly this "battery design arrangment" goes back many years before newer battery technlogy was developed. But designers still insist on using them even today. They are cheap to make.

"After battery installation, place the handsets in their base unit or charger and allow to charge for 16 hours before use. You can keep the battery charged by returning the handsets to their base unit or charger after each use. When the battery is fully depleted, a
recharge takes about 12 hours. Average talk time on a fully charged battery is about eight
hours depending on environmental conditions, standby time is approximately four days."
