Thanks Ultimitloozr for your quick response. My problem is that there is no TASK BAR,no START MENU.

I have just tried moving the cursor DOWN,up,sideways as you suggested.....to no avail.

No,there is no explorer.exe in TASK MANAGER.

By the way I am running Windows XP prof.

The system seems to load fine then when the task bar and icons are just about to appear,I get the following message in a box.

    Data Execution Protection

    Name:Userinit Logon application

    Publisher: Microsoft Corporation

Microsoft has decided to close this program

Then there is a message that says "close message"

Will this info. help you to help me?????.

    Thanks people.
The laptop could get into safe mode fine and nothing more.

I got into the Registry and the Userinit line was there and all was in oder, even the comma at the end.

I just had to re-install Windows and all is well.

    Thanks all the same.

Okay, let's try to manually start your desktop. Open up the Task Manager again by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Click on File -> New Task. In the text box enter explorer.exe, then press Enter. Let me know how the system responds. It should bring up your desktop. If that doesn't work, restart your computer and press F8 just as the first Windows screen appears. This will give you a menu of options. Select Safe Mode. Let me know if it boots all tha way into Windows and we can go from there.

So, when you click on the start button the start menu doesn't appear? Or is the entire taskbar gone? Does pressing the Windows key bring up the start menu? If the taskbar is missing, does moving the cursor to one edge of the screen make it reappear (normally the bottom unless you have previously moved the taskbar)? Can you press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bring up the Task Manager and ensure the explorer.exe is running?

You've got the wrong entry in your registry.
Userinit string should be:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

Note the trailing comma which must be there.
Often this entry is damaged by malware.

Ways to deal with this:

  1. Install Windows on a second partition, load the damaged registry hive and fix it.
  2. Boot with a Bart's PE or ERD Commander and fix the registry entry.
Or if you manage to get the register editor running just fix the registry key.

In the register you have to go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon

Find the line named: Userinit
Make sure it points to: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

If it doesn't exist, make one, if it doesn't point to the same place, change it.

Make sure you don't forget the comma at the end!

    This is correct:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

    and this is wrong:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe

Just to be extra clear about it :)

I am getting a message my userinit logon application has stopped working i am using windows 7

This is a problem with the startup, it is trying to find the userinit portion of the boot and it cannot or it has become corrupt, the only to fix this is to rebuild the startup. Try inserting the installation disc and selecting automatic startup repair. If that is not an option or does not work, you will save yourself alot of time and trouble by reinstalling.

When my computer is turned on it shows the blue login page, when i click on the login icon, it goes to log-in but logs out automatically by itself.

Hello jwbandit402,

Try booting the computer into "Safe Mode" by pressing the F8 key at startup and see if it will continue with the login process. If not try performing a "Repair Installation" with your Windows Install disc to repair any corrupted system files that may be keeping you from logging in.

Hope this helps. Don't forget to leave feedback. Thank you.

Help

First I used knoppix to check whether userinit.exe exists in C:/windows/system32, it was there. Then I checked explorer.exe to be there in C:/windows. Then I tried to copy an userinit.exe / explorer.exe of my pc to this pc but this did not solve the problem.
Then I tried to logon remotely to the registry without success.
Finally I used an unix regedit tool to check the registry (used 2nd option under http://www.raymond.cc/... In the registry everything was fine, pointing to "C:/Windows/system32/userinit.exe,".
I also checked permissions on these files with knoppix, everything fine.

Finally I got it working by doing the following:
1) copying C:/Windows/system32/userinit.exe to C:/Windows/system32/userinitnew.exe
2) using tool from above to edit registry and set the winlogon value to point to userinitnew.exe
