I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport, V-6 SOHC 4WD. Manual transmission.
The clutch pedal is now, about half the time, barely ''off the floor'', giving me very little ability to shift smoothly. Other times, the clutch pedal is in the normal position. About a year ago, I had the clutch plate and bearings repaired (after hearing a bizarre noise and having the the pedal barely off the floor), but now these current symptoms are going on, minus the noise of the bearings going bad.
The fact the pedal is sometimes ''fine'' and other times not leads me to believe this could be a cable issue. Do 2001 Ford Explorer Sports HAVE a clutch cable?

Might have a fluid leak it is a hydraulic clutch see if there is fluid at the bottom of the trans bell housing

hi, as far as i can remember its impossible to do the work without removing the whole lot as you just have not got enough room to get the tools in to get the job done, you could contact your nearest main dealers technical department but im pretty sure that the last one we did here we had to take the whole lot out as we could not get the tools in as their just isnt enough room they build these engine big enough to fill the engine bay leaving you no room to carry out these type of repairs so taking the engine out is the only way your going to get this work carried out.
