Question about Dell Inspiron 8500 Notebook

Graphics card failure

System: Dell Inspiron 8500, Laptop running XP Home.

Video Graphics card: NVIDIA Ge Force4 4200 64MB

(2 months ago Added 1 chip Memory 1GB, removed 256MB x 2 chips (512MB) ).

On booting up:

Observations:

1. Dell logo against black background, with some disturbance in background. Next XP Logo comes discoloured (tinted). Then screen goes black. Sometime earlier there was a Blue screen that used to come up with all the text messages with the final line about memory dumping.

On pressing F12, during the startup on the Dell logo screen, and opting for Diagnostics tests:

* Hardware Diagnostics - Custom Test (Customize - Service Tag 9VX581S)

Video - VESA SVGA Video

- Video Memory Test - (Under this test, results show Error code 5300: 0119, which different comments for different parameters)

Msg: Detected a failure while writing and reading video memory.

(e.g.) Video mode: Dh (320 x 200 16) Address A002Ch, expected to read Oh, but read 1Dh instead

* Video Hardware Test - Pass

* Text Mode Character test - Pass

* Text mode Color test - Pass

* Text mode pages test - Pass

* Graphics mode test - Pass

* Color palettes test - pass

* Solid color test - pass

Note that ALL OTHER TESTS, namely -

Processor, System Boars, System Management, System Memory, Sensors, Battery, CD-ROM/DVD, Fan, IEEE 1394, USB, Keyboard, Pointing Device, Network Interface, PCI Device, Parallel Port, Serial Port, Audio, Hard Drive

HAVE PASSED when run through their respective tests.

Now after taking the card out and cleaning the contacts, replacing it the LCD does not come on, where should I look for the problem, I guess a ribbin connector has come out.

I am not giving up so easily. Once I get the screen to activate again, I am sure it is one of the ribbon connectors that has slipped out or not connecting properly after I took the board (NVIDIA Ge Force4 4200 64MB) out and put it back. It was displaying someting before I did so. I plan to do a 'heatsink' treatment that I saw on one of the sites that advises sticking a copper film over the graphics processor to take care of the hextra heat generated that generally causes the graphics board to give problems. Tell me where to look for this ribbon connector. I tried an external monitor, noting happening.

Pontelemon, the card was the NVIDIA Ge Force4 4200 64MB

The solution only told what the diagnostic test told me which i had given in my request. What i needed was an alternative solution or suggestion that would have helped me. I needed to first get the LCD screen to come alive.

OK, there are small BGA VRAM chips right next to GPU on the
"graphic card" One of them is bad/cold solder and needs replacement
or REFLOW.
And it can't be done without BGA machine.

If the pc works the same when you boot in Safe Mode then the video card has failed - buy a new one.
If the pc works in Safe Mode then the video driver is corrupted - uninstall it then reboot normally then go here and download the latest available driver.

1 GB of ram? Check the software for minimum PC system requirements. It will say how many MHz is necessary to play the game.It will also give you what video card (min),RAM(min),DirectX (7 or Higher?) this game requires MINIMUM to run.Quite often the game will run,but poorly.Your AMD 2200 runs at 1800 which isn't lightening fast, but sufficient.I think the addition of at least 1 more GB of RAM is what you need,a total of 3GB would really make the computer happy when playing games.
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Run this program from Microsoft to test your current memory for errors.
My computer is much like yours,I have XP Media-The 8600 card,a dual core 2.8 processor and 3GB of RAM.This setup will run a online racing game without hick ups at 1152 x 864 resolution. When I only had 1GB of RAM it would stutter like it was constantly trying to load the program,so I added another Gig and it started playing allot better. It couldn't keep up with Halo online until I added another 1GB for a total of 3GB.I am using a 32x version of XP,going to a 64x setup would improve performance even more.
Sorry,I'm talking too much.Try the RAM after you test what you have, you'll be glad you did!
