Question about Canon IXUS V2 Digital Camera

1 Answer

E18 error dispaly

I ljust completed video'ing my neices during a family gathering on my s2 is. The screen gave me a low battery indication..no biggie. The camera shutoff without the lens retracting. I thought that was unusual. Replaced the batteries, turned on the device, all i got was a small clicking sound in the area of the lens itself. I repeated this several times to try to fix it.I also tried the other troubleshooting methods posted as well with out success. I have the camera for several years without any hitch. Good camera. Wonder if it lived out its expectancy? Is it time to invest in another; i.e perhaps a s3 or s5 is?

E18 for S2 15

Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

Cannon Powershot S21S is stuck on on/ A message E18 came up on the blank screen in the let hand corner. changed the batteries plus the lithium battery.

Hi,

"E18" indicates an error that involves the lens unit or lens cover in your camera .This error appears where the lens is prevented from properly extending or retracting .The error may also be displayed if the lens camera has been subjected to an external shock, or if a foreign substance (i.e. liquid, sand, dirt) enters the camera.Hold the camera so that your fingers do not touch the lens unit when you are shooting. Make sure the camera is off before the camera is placed back in the case. Exercise caution to ensure that the camera does not accidentally power on while the camera is stored inside the case.If you cannot clear the error code by turning the camera off and then on again, or if the error code is displayed frequently, a camera malfunction may have occurred and might require service from canon.Or else try pressing the power button on and held it down while extending the zoom lens. The lens will extend out and the camera will be freed from the error.

Thank you !!

Won't shut off or take pics. code E18 comes on

Try removing the batteries and cleaning the contacts inside the battery compartment with a cotton swab "dampened" with rubbing alcohol. Also you'll want to clean the battery and charger the same way. Thank you, Dana

Canon PowerShot S2 IS camera showing code E18

Hello there,
The E18 error is related to the LENS not able to retract fully. If it is still under warranty, I would advise you bring it to the nearest service center. This is to avoid further damages. Otherwise, you can try a few things below.
There are a couple of things you can do.
1. Turn it on and then off. Spray canned air around the lens.
If trick 1 will not work out, try this.
2. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn on the camera and then give it a couple of firm whacks on the side. Make sure nothing is blocking the lens and wait for it to fully retract.
Let me know how it goes.

I have a PowerShot S2 IS Icannot take a picture screen show E18.

E18 is the standard Canon lens error. The lens gets stuck when extending. If you did not drop it and there are no signs of damage you can check with Canon and try to get the camera repaired under warranty.

If it is not covered here are a few methods to try on your own, at your own risk.

E18 error dispaly

For the very brave only! I had this problem on a Powershot a480 - lens error, restart camera, but the lens refused to budge. repair quotes were ridiculous, so, with nothing to lose, I carefully removed the back. Then the front. Not an easy job, not knowing where or how things were fastened. I couldn't see any obvious major problem, but figured the fault was something to do with the lens, and noticed the small motor drive had an optical sensor on the shaft, so I gently rotated it with a pin. It felt a little sticky, but did rotate, so I replaced the batteries and hit the on/off button. Surprise! It worked. Put it all back together, checking that things were still working as I went, and it seems to be fine. I don't know how long it will last. I would suspect that the camera had either suffered a bump, or maybe switched off at the wrong time, which caused the optical sensor thing to stop at an inopportune moment, putting it out of sync somehow. Took me about 2 hours to dismantle it, not really knowing what I was doing, and about 15 minutes to get it back together again.

I have a Canon Powershot S2 IS which has worked great till recently it locks down for no apparent reason. I hear a series of beeps and see E18 in the bottom at left of screen. If the zoom is out, it...

Taken from a canon forum:

Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.

Apparently, people who posted about this incident on forums say they had to send the camera for repair and that Canon has horrible customer support and response time.

-Basically what it came down to is if it's under warranty, get it replaced. If not, try using compressed air to blow out dirt and dust from the lens and all reachable components.

Or just gently push the lens back.

It is a Canon design malfunction and has happened on plenty of cameras.

My Canon 40D digital SLR loves to give me Error 5, and my flash wont pop up. It's just an unfortunate side affect of owning a Canon.

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

E 18 problem

the E18 means the lens system has a problem. I had it with my S2 and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Eventually it stopped working. The only solution was sending it to repair, they changed the lens system.

Best Regards
