Spider bracket on back of S.S tub rotted away

Kenmore front load washer Model# 970-C41032-00 aluminum Spider bracket rotted away from s.s tub which caused a thumping noise on spin cycle. Is there a recalled on this washer? It's a manufacture's defect due to the fact that putting stainless steel with aluminum and water will cause GALVANOIC CORROSION !

This does not apply only to Kenmore brand machines, the 970 is manufactured by Frigidaire but to many others a s well.

I do not believe the 'rot' of the spider is galvanic corrosion but what is know as pitting or chemical corrosion.

Aluminium, and its alloys, are corroded when immersed in an aqueous solution with a pH value below about 4.0 (acidic) [nitric acid is a well known exception] or above about 8.0 (alkaline), most laundry aids, detergent including HE detergent, borax, bleach (sodium hypochlorite), sodium carbonate (washing soda), sodium percarbobante (found in Affresh and OxiClean [powder]), sodium hydroxide, Affresh and OxiClean can have pH values above 8.0 should the required concentrations be reached. At the normal operating levels found in washing machines these values are not exceeded. However when the machine is shut down any water remaining will contain, inter alia, soil from the laundry, products of the interactions between the soil and the laundry aids used, unused laundry aids, and the chemicals found in the tap water. As the water from this mixture evaporates the concentration of the 'impurities' rises until such time as a 'smelly sludge' develops and/or a pH level above about 8.0 is reached and corrosion occurs.

Prime areas for these deposits to occur are, in my opinion, the recesses found at, or very near, the hub of some of the aluminium alloys spiders found in front load washing machines. The final spin, no matter how fast, will not, in my opinion, remove all the 'water' from theses recesses.

To view a corroded spider (not to the point of catastrophic failure) and one with a build of 'smelly crud' please visit: -

http://www.ripoffreport.com/appliances/electrolux-home-prod/electrolux-home-products-n-am-4cd6d.htm

These spiders were removed from Frigidaire built 'Kenmore' machines.

Or, for a Whirlpool spider

Not all manufacturers use spiders with recesses, Speed Queen do not (Speed Queen call them trunnions) and photographs at: -

http://www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?30834

show Miele spiderss without recesses. There may be others.

Should corrosion of the spider have occurred it is also my contention that it is highly likely that the principal product of this corrosion, aluminium oxide, will harbour 'water', as described above which, in time will turn foul smelling.

Additionally the main product of the spider corrosion is aluminium oxide, the same hard, abrasive material used as the 'grit' for some 'sandpapers. I believe that should some of this get into the wash water the soft lips of the spider shaft seal will not survive very long and once the seal has failed water an the aluminium oxide will get into the bearings and it is goodbye bearings.

There is a good paper on galvanic corrosion at: -
http://www.unene.ca/un1001/UN1001_Galvanic%20Corrosion.ppt
and a good, one page paper on what the author calls 'micro galvanic corrosion', I grew up calling it 'pitting corrosion'.

This link shows you your tub parts. There are 2 springs and 2 shock absorbers. Those may be bad broken or loose and one other thing to check is make sure the inside drum has not broken off of the spider assembly in the back. An easy way to check that is open the door and grab the front lip of the metal tub and try to move it up and down, you will notice a huge amount of movement if it is broken loose. The videos I posted apply to all front load washers, The first 2 are great on diagnosing and the last one shows whats left of a broken spider gear. If it is the spider support assembly then you will have to replace the entire inner tub and that is about $400 just in parts.

If you turn the inner wash drum by hand, what kind of noise do you hear? If it is a thumping kind of noise, it would mean that the spider support arms are broken. If the noise is a loud rumbling sound, similar to a jet engine when it is spinning, it would mean that you have a bearing seal failure and the bearings need to be replaced. Either problem is a big job to fix since the entire washer needs to be taken apart. Get a few estimates before deciding whether it is worth fixing. Sorry.

During the spin cycle there is a very loud knocking noise,

Could be the spider arms are broken. You can confirm this by turning the tub by hand, if you hear any kind of thumping sound as you turn the tub, then the spider is broken. The spider is the support arms that hold the wash tub to the drive shaft. It's very expensive to repair.

If there is no thumping sound when you turn the drum, it could be that one of the supports or spring is broken. Hope this helps.

We have a kenmore elite washer mod. 970-c40062-00 ser. xc11700832. the washer leaks, and is very noisy. It is 10 years old

Your Stainless Steel drum is supported inside of the washer tub by a spider assembly. The assemply, which is made of cast aluminum, has corroded (steel and aluminum and detegent don't mix) and the spider assembly has broken. The drum has likely wobbled enough to wear a hole through the tub. You need to replace the drum and spider assembly, and tub.

Kenmore spin cycle thumping noises

I just went through the same issue with my Kenmore front loading washing machine. I assumed (and a Sears repairman also told me) that it is the bearings. After I took the drum assembly out, I saw the rear drum broken and the inner tub hitting the outer tub. I ordered the outer drum assembly and only when I took the inner drum assembly out I realized the the "Spider" attached to the inner drum (and spindle) was broken. Entire drum assembly cost $417 + shipping and it may be cheaper in the long run to buy a new washer. I like the front loaders because they save water and good for the environment, but the US manufacturers have not yet perfected the technology like European manufacturers (or they don't want the machines to last too long just like cars). Anyway, I am looking into welding the spider tomorrow. If not will return the outer tub assembly and buy a top loading washer for $300!
