Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

I had a service tech at my house to repair my refrigerator. He also took a look at my Maytag WU504 dishwaser, which was not cleaning the dishes anymore. He was less familiar with dishwasher diagnosis, but found that the lower spray arm was pumping out water through the jets properly in the cycles, but that the spray arm was not rotating. He seemed stumped and called his supervisor, who suggested it might be the wash impeller. I have looked at the parts diagram on partselectdotcom and taken the bottom assembly apart to look for problems. I believe the problem is a broken spray arm support nut (part# 4). I can see where the top portion of this nut (which limits its travel) has broken off and I recall finding just such a piece in the bottom of my dishwasher just before the problems started. It appears that this nut, when properly tightened, allows the wash arm support to spin and stay in place. With the nut broken, it spins and then tightens on the bolt (part# 29) in the top of the sub-assembly (part# 9). Before ordering the nut, I wanted to confirm this diagnosis. Thanks!

You are absolutely correct!!

The support retaining nut allows the arm to spin without falling off.

And it would definately cause dishes not to clean if the arm didnt rotate.

You did a great troubleshooting job.

Unfortunately, companies dont want to spend money on a stainless locknut.... but I guess that would limit the number of service calls they get too :D

PartsSelect is a trusted appliance parts seller, and I recommend them regularly.

Thanks for using FixYa!!

Dishwasher leaves behind gritty residue i am not sure of what to try...

We have a Kitchen Aid dishwasher, 10 years old, never any problems until 2 weeks ago, then we started noticing a gritty subtance on the dishes and glassware. We're on well service, psi 40-60. water hardness is 6 grains. small trace of sulphur, and we have a Mermaid sulphur system, then a complete house carbon filter, and finally a Culligan water softner. Checked everything, Water temp. at kitchen was 120, all cycles on dishwasher were operating. Called in repair service, he says something is breaking down in the dishwasher, best to buy a new one. That'll be $150.00. Thank you very much. Tried the white vinegar, no change. Next bought 2 bottles of Dishwaser Magic. Slight improvement. Next bought 1 bottle of Finish Dishwasher Cleaner. Bingo. The thing is like brand new. even the trays slide in/out much easier. None of the dishsoaps contain phosphate, which is what helps disolve the minerals in the water. I'm not sure what the gritty stuff is, maybe the buildup over time, and it just keeps getting redistributed through the wash and rinse cycles, and finally baked on in the dry cycle. According to a tech with many years repairing appliances, the majority of their calls are for dishwasher poor performance, all because they removed the one compound that's been cleaning our dishes for years, Phosphate. We've always used Cascade gel soap. best on the market today, Finish Quantum. We tried it and dishes look terrific. It's a small tablet that fits in the soap dispenser. All Mfg's. today recommend that you run a dishwasher cleaner once a year, Experienced tech recommends every 3 months maybe more if you're on hard water. Good luck.

Ice dish warped

Contact an appliance service company for repairs. When plastic warps inside the refrigerator it perhaps has been caused by something overheating, etc.

Dishwasher - clean/replace screen on bottom

Try running a wash with vinegar in it, empty the dish washer and get it started once the water is going into it empty a bottle of vinegar into it and it should remove most of the alkaline build up.

No need to rinse before the next use as the normal cycle does a hot rinse at the end.

My Maytag Performa Dishwasher is leaking when doing the dishes...

Sounds like your fill valve is stuck in the filling position...see if you you have water standing in it a couple hrs after a drain cycle. if it does then the valve needs to be replaced or you can take it apart carefully,(there is a sping that might fly out and get lost) and clean it. Mine had some small trash in it from the city water line.. The left side has an over flow hole is where your water is coming from..

Compressor replaced and now just dies- have to unplug and plug back in, but still not reaching temp=-

I believe they did not vacuum the system correctly and allowed a restiction in the line. Otherwise it would have cooled correctly from the beginning.
Your turning the system off and back on allowed the restriction to move further down. It will probably lodge in the filter dryer.
The filter dryer should be changed again. The reason being the system was not cleaned properly when they replaced the compressor.

Model # dwu7702aae has heat delay light coming on during cycle. Why?

Heater is used to both heat water during clean cycle and dry dishes after wash cycle. Most washers have either a separate switch for Heat or Dry for optional use, or some have the water heat and dish dry options built into cycle set options.

You can save money by turning off the Dish Dry option since it is a very in-efficient way to dry dishes. Instead, open the wishwasher door after washing cycle completes, just enough so fresh air can get into, and humid air can escape, dishwasher.

Water Heat option is only needed for dried food on dishes, and is never needed if dishes are either rised off before putting them in the dishwasher, or rinsed off inside the dishwaser with a Rinse cycle, if they are to stand for a time waiting for a full dishwasher for wash.
