Question about Boating

1 Answer

My 84 merc 40h will not pull up any speed when you put the throttle down. Its on a 84 bass tracker 16 foot flat bottom boat. It has fuel delivery problems but i am putting a fuel pump kit in today. Do you think that has anything to do with it or do you think it is electric problem?

Yes most likely fuel delivery, or carburettor related. Put in new fuel pump, then test... If still no go, time to strip the carburettor and give it a good cleanout, including the high speed jet needles.

if the motor run without any problem beside lack of power, the fuel delivery correction should be just that.

I have a 03 Sun Tracker pontoon & Merc 60 my throttle trim will lower motor but not raise it.It works fine from motor ,up & down okAlso just had voltage reg. replaced and tach stopped working .Help

Time to just go threw all the wiring. You have a boat. It's on the water or not. On the water electrolysis kicks in 1000%. On land corrosion set in. Check and clean the wire plugs, replace if necessary. Replace ground point connectors. Add wire if necessary. Just a note. When I do boats, I solder all connections and use silicone shrink wrap on the wires.

Boat does not plane

you could try a lower pitched prop.2" would up the revs by 400 revs.,which would up the revs ,but give you more low down thrust,and/or tucking the motor under more[if you have electric trim/tilt].thats a big boat and fair bit of weight for a 40hp..my 40hp merc is on a 13ft saracen, and with two of us it takes a while to get gooing.so i bought a ProPulse prop, with adjustable pitch.been god to try different pitches

Our 40 Merc Won't open all the way up under load.

A couple of possibilities are the spark advance and the fuel line. Carburetors can do it as well as a clogged screen on the fuel pump. So can a bad coil.

Look for electrical parts under the flywheel area of the motor. When you move the throttle there should be movement of the stator to advance the spark. Check for binding wires or disconnected linkage.
See if the spark is jumping strong to the plugs for coil strength or have it tested.
Check fuel pump screen and diaphram.
Before messing with carbs-disconnect cables for throttle on boat. Work by hand directly at motor. You may have cables restricting movement.
Thats about all I can think of. Let us know of outcome.

Motor fires off great and run good but at full speed after 15 mins it dies and won't start after 10mins it will start but at hight speed only after i get it going run good at 1/2 speed

What Year? Have the coils checked, they are located under the flywheel, some have been known to act up over time due to heat because of age. They time between dieing and restart souns like they had time to cool off until overheating again
