SOURCE: help to fix WD external hard drive

Try and use hirens boot cd to breath new life into the drive. It may just need to be repartitioned and reformatted to resolve the problem. Hirens can be found through a google search and it's a free download. All you need to do is burn it to disk. Then enter your bios and make sure that you can boot from your cd/dvd drive. After that move through the hard drive tools and see what you can find wrong with it. More often then not you'll find the problem using this fine boot disk. However, if it doesn't work then there is one other possible method.

Download this from western digitals website.

it's a last resort method to trying to revive a hard drive. Sometimes it works. Most of the time the drive is dead and gone.
Good Luck!

SOURCE: Help!! Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise

Yes. This is going to sound strange. Put the drive in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. Next day, take it out, hook it up, and see if it is recognized.

If so, under My computer, right click on the drive - click Properties - then Tools, then Error Checking. Check box Automatically Fix File System Errors. Let it run. If everything shows up, be ready to transfer wnat you want off of it.

Freezing shrinks the metal parts . Microscopically, but often enough to get stuck parts free enough to get working.

I just went through this with a 750Gig Book. now i have reformatted the drive (after transferring all over to new drive) and the clicking is gone and all disk checks are fine and i wonder whether to trust this device ever again... Hate to just throw out a large drive.

You will need to try formatting the drive. You can do this from the drive management section on the Mac.

Wd external hard drive beeps

That probably means that the hard drive is what I like to call "roasty toasty." Most often, when you hear beeps, that is caused by the drive receiving bad instructions from a corrupted/failed logic board. Data can still be retrieved from such a drive by a professional data recovery company (if this is of interest to you) and is most often quite successful in this situation since there is no physical damage to the read-write heads or the platters themselves. However, using such a service is still quite cost-prohibitive (generally around $1000 for a reputable company). If the data is not that important to you, then just pitch the drive and get a new one.

External WD 1TB. I cannot retrieve my files it says Parameter is incorrect when that is gone It shows there are no files on my HD and there are plenty of files all psd files as well

I'm sorry to say that this may be due to a corrupt HDD. WD Hard drives tend to die far too fast (I know too well unfortunately).
If this is under warranty, I would call up WD support service for a free replacement.
If you want to take more invasive steps, I will be happy to help you try and recover your files.

My wd external hard drive, turns on when connected to my laptop, but does not work all i hear is a clicking noise.

it is likely that your hard drive is broken internally. th noise you are hearing is the needle hitting the platter inside the drive itself, something that normally should never happen. there are a few possible quick fixes, but nothing permanent other than replacement. you can leave the drive until it is cool then try. also some people have said putting it in the freezer in a ziplock bag for 15minutes will work, as moisture can damage the drive as well i do not recommend it

HELP! My WD 500Gb hit the floor :( was still working but today the computer doesnt recognize the drive when you do a search! Tried a differant computer same problem. It makes a sound like its reading back...

The hard drive could be damaged but the USB adapter case electronics is OK. Therefore the computer can see the USB device (adapter case) but not the hard drive. If the hard drive makes a clicking noise or you cannot hear the hard drive spin, then the hard drive is definitely faulty.

There is very little chance you can recover data from a faulty hard drive.
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise- Help !!!

There is a number of data recovery solutions online. Just google it. I would recommend one that sends out a static sensitive bag for transportation. But the customer service rep you spoke with, is probably right. The actuator arm has probably locked up and is failing to move back and forth reading and writing to the platters. Good luck and i feel for you with it being your new born on the hard drive.

Western Digital WD 1200VE; 120 GB external hard drive unable to boot

You need to send it to a data recovery house like Drive Savers. The prices range from 500 to 3000 USD for data recovery and they can't guarantee 100 percent success. The platters need to be removed in a clean room and placed in a unit to read the data. They then copy the data to another drive or to optical disks. Unfortunately when the drive hit the floor the drive sustained physical damage hence not starting up.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Cheers.
