I have a 1985 Volkswagen golf 1.8 gas. It runs a little ruff when it starts but then runs smooth. The problem is it just randomly starts running ruff and then shuts off sometimes it will start back up but tries to cut off again and spits and sputters and then clears up. I have replaced the fuel filter and cleaned out the tank which seemed to have a lot of trash in it seem to run fine for a little bit but now doing the same things again. Please help if you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

SOURCE: I have a 1999 Yukon,

You've triggered the anti theft security system. You will have to take it t a dealership to have the system reset so your engine will start. Regardless of what you've been told about clearing the computer codes, taking the positive cable loose is not the way to go. All you have to do is pull the fuse or fuses that go to the ecm or engine computer. That way, you don't mess wit the security system. Your radio may be locked down too. If it is, you'll have to go through a lengthy process to get the code to unlock it.

Engine problem

Probably a head gasket problem, once again. It's burning the coolant off the plug . To make sure ,use a "block tester" from NAPA ,it is a liquid that changes color with the presence of exhaust gas in the coolant.

How do i check the back up light switch in a 85 vw golf - manual transmission - gas engine?

place cars ignition in the acc position, but not started, lights on first position, put car in reverse. If the lights do not come on, chances are its either 1) the bulbs or 2) the switch. Switch is mounted on the transmission, and has a simple wire going to it.

first; there are two) oil pressure switches on the car. you can replace the one till your blue in the face, and it will still come on. we ground that one; so it won't scare people to death.(1 in head.1 in block).

Change fuel filter, and add a can of SEAFOAM to FULL tank of PREMIUM gas. Help it to idle 3-5 minutes.(this is the firsr year of the body change and engine change1.8, but they are good cars.)
After idle; drive somewhere where you can open it up for 10 miles or so. that should help alot.In he future, respond at [email protected]
