Grease stains from Maytag MAV7200AWW washer

I have been getting clear, grease-like stains on my clothes the last few weeks. I initially thought it was my dryer. I posted a problem on this site last week and received a reply to clean the inside of my dryer and try again. I did so and continued to pull clothes out of my dryer this weekend with spots on them. I happened to pull a brand new white dress shirt out of the washer to hang up and air dry. It was full of stains. Where could the grease be coming from and how can I stop this from happening? It's ruining the clothes of my household of 4! I've tried treating the stains and they don't usually come out.

Thank you VERY much for responding to my problem. If I'm not mistaken, we recently replaced the transmission in the washer. I happened to be reading the Queen of Clean's Laundry Tips book the other day and she talked about clear, grease-like stains from mineral deposit build-up. Her recommendation was to clean the washer by running a quart of bleach through the longest cycle followed by running a quart of white vinegar through another cycle. I did so this weekend and, so far, no spots. I'm waiting to see how long this lasts to see if it was just a coincidence or if it truly helped.

    Thanks again for your help!

I pulled the paperwork on our repair last night. The washer had a bad transmission and was replaced on 19 Dec. We were told that the transmission for our washer had a 10-year warranty so it only cost us labor to repair. Now, it did take the guy 2-3 hours to fix so our total bill was $275. That sure beats a new washer at over $800, though!

Here's something else I read in Linda Cobb's "Talking Dirty Laundry with the Queen of Clean" last night: Clean the automatic fabric softener dispenser 4-6 weeks to keep it working well and to prevent it from leaving softener stains on clothes. Liquid softener can leave blue spots on clothes and marks from dryer sheets can look like small grease patches. To clean the dispenser you must warm 1 cup of white vinegar in microwave and pour it into the dispenser as you would softener. Make sure you use warm vinegar and make sure you do this when the washer is empty. Large pieces of sticky fabric softener will occasionally be flushed out during cleaning, and they could adhere to clothes. I suggest cleaning the fabric softener dispenser when you are cleaning the machine.

It is equally important to keep the bleach dispenser clean. Clean any removable parts by washing with hot water and dishwashing liquid. When you clean the washer with white vinegar, be sure to add some to the bleach dispenser, too.

Hope this information helps us both!

I am having the same exact problem. Is is the dryer sheets / fabric softner or is it the transmission? I have ruined so many t'shirts and need to get this fixed / resolved.

HI! I just posted a question to "" and am having the exact same problem. I paid $9 for this answer and was happy to pay it because I now know what it is! From what I have been told, it is from the transmission in your washer and will cost at least $400 to fix it (that's just a ballpark figure... I have a Frigidaire and that was the figure I was given). So, basically, it would be more cost effective for you to purchase a new washer.

Hmmm... how much for the transmission fix? Also, please keep me posted on whether the other worked for you. I'd hate to go out and purchase a new washer and that not be the problem. Thanks for replying back! :)

You know... that's a thought -- the dryer sheets leaving marks? I don't use and have never used fabric softener so I've never had any in my washer... so I can rule that out. But I DO use dryer sheets! Hmmm... wondering if there is a way to keep static off your clothing without the dryer sheets or maybe something you can put your dryer sheets in to keep them from actually touching your clothing? Or does that defeat the purpose? LOL. I guess I should check that out, huh? Thanks again!

My clothings get grease like stains sfter I wash them with Kenmore washer.

Don't know if this is a front or top loader since you did not supply the model number. But if the stains are grease, it could only mean that the bearing seal has been compromised. Water is getting into the bearings and the bearing grease is what is on your clothes. You need to have the bearing and the seal replaced on your machine.

It is not to bad on a top loader in terms of cost to repair. But, if you have a front loader, that is a different story, since the entire machine needs to be torn apart to get to the bearings and the replacement parts and labor can be as much as a new washer. In either case, get a few estimates before deciding whether to repair or replace the washer. Hope this helps you.

Are you using a liquid fabric softener ? If so , try using dryer sheets instead . Maytag is known for making liquid softener look like grease on clothes . After switching for a while , and still grease looking stains , then it is possible for the water to be getting into the transmission and pushing the grease up into the tub . Rare , but happens . Time for another machine if that happens .

Grease-like stains on clothing

hi. i can help. the grease is coming from one of two places. Either some item with grease on it got placed in the machine and the grease transferred to the tub where it will cause the problem until it is spotted and removed with a degreaser, or wears off.

OR the grease is coming from the washer itself. Perhaps some grease oozed out of the mechanicals related to the aggitator.

Either way I would get a strong flash light or trouble light and look carefully in the tub and around the aggitator for grease. Then remove it with a cloth and some degreaser, available at any auto parts store.

Clear greasy stains appearing on clothes from brand new LG front loading washer

the grease i'm sure would be coming from the machine. look at the water solenoids, detergent dispenser, dispenser solenoids, everything with rubber hoses.

they do put a clear grease just to insert the hose easier in the plant. and if it was not removed during QC, then it would come out now as you uses it.

tnx 4 using fixya,
