Question about Whirlpool Gold White-on-White 21.9 cu. ft. Conquest Side-By-Side Refrigerator with Ice and Water GD2SHAXLQ Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

I have a GE side by side.. When we got home last night I noticed some water on the the floor and the power was on inside the refrigerator but the cooling apparently stopped working. I moved the fridge and unplugged it and vacuumed out a lot of dust around the condensor fan. When I plugged it back in I noticed the fan was not running, so I unplugged it and let it sit for a half hour or so. After setting the temp gauges to 0. I then plugged it back in and set the temps to 7. At this point the fan did not come on however I left it and about a half hour later it appeared to be working again. Had someone left the freezer door opened and it over heated and shut down? Was the dust buildup the problem? Or is there something else I should be looking for?

As I stated in my post, the refrigerator did resume operation and to this point has not failed. I guess my question still remains... could the freezer door being left cracked open have caused the thing to overheat and shut down as well as the buildup of dust on the condenser area, or is there some other issue like the 'defrost timer ' that should be watched?

The defrost timer will turn off the compressor and its cooling fan. At the same time it turns on the defrost heater, and usually leaves the freezer fan running. Defrost can take half an hour, easy. As soon as the defrost thermostat is satisfied, the defrost heater is supposed to turn off, and the compressor may come back on. The defrost timer is about the size of a cell phone, with about five wires going to it in a plug. It has a small dial on it that only goes one way. You can mark it and wait a half hour to see if it moves.

A partially open door will make a compressor run, run, run.
That will make a fridge sweat if it's door is cracked, and a freezer freeze up. When a freezer defrosts and there is a lot of ice in the freezer coil area, it may overflow the drain pan. Apparently your defrost timer is not stuck, because the unit went back to work. I would still watch the timer. A bent door can be pushed back into shape. The gasket should be tight all around. Replacing a gasket is not a big deal if it's cracked.

LEAKING FRIDGE

A magnitude of problems could be caused by this, you should really call someone to come out and look at the refrigerator. With that model having a ice maker and water dispenser, it could be a crack in the water filtration which is typically located in the lower read of the refrigerator. If nothing else seems to be wet on the inside of the refrigerator you can almost guarantee that its the filter and pump in the back leaking which will require a skilled professional to look at it.

GE side by side refrigerator has totally stopped working.

Look inside the unit and make sure the thermostat hasn't been accidentally bumped or turned.

You could also have a stuck or malfunctioning defrost timer. This device, usually located at the bottom of the unit, sometimes accessible from the front, interrupts the compressor operation and initiates a defrost cycle in the freezer section (using electric heating elements). It is basically a timer. Sometimes they stick or stop working. If you can reach it, you may be able to rotate the dial clockwise with a screwdriver and get the refrigerator working for the time being. However, you should replace it if this is the cause.

Frigidaire Side-By-Side Refrigerator Leaks Water on Floor

I don't have the same refrigerator, but had a similar issue with a GE. Melt the ice at the bottom of the freezer. I think the water comes from the auto defrost feature. There should be a hole at the back bottom of the freezer that water would go into, and run to an evaporator pan under the refrigerator. The tube may be blocked that allows this water to drain, so it is backing up in the bottom of the freezer, and overflowing through the front bottom of the freezer to your floor.

Do you have a Dog ??? I had a customer who had a problem like this once.................Only to find out in the middle of the night the dog jumped up and with his nose pressed the water dispenser..If not plz check inside the freezer and see if your drain is clogged pull the bottom drawer out and look on the back wall..
PS: the pan even with a clear drain will not fill up the condenser fan with the heat from the condenser will evaparate the water after a defrost cycle
