Take a look at the rear paper stopper in your cassette. if it is pressed too tightly against the rear of paper stack, it will prevent paper from lifting up as paper is used. best to leave 1/8" gap between stopper and paper.

most paper has a smooth side and a little less smooth side, try flipping the paper. in the pack use the top side as the printing side when u load. try a different brand of paper could easily correct the problem,

some feed trays work best when nearly full also, try half full etc.

Wipe the paper feed rollers with a clean rag wetted with plain water. You can also replace the feed rollers, search for "paper feeding kit" for this printer. Should be $20 to $30.

Clicking noise with MFC-8640D another case

Usually it's because the paper is too tight in the feed tray. The paper length tab on the end away from the feed roller is too tight. If you cant rotate the gear on the paper tray and lift the paper, it's too tight for the machine to lift.

MFC886DN will not pick up the paper in the lower tray.

first, most common problem is the rear stopper in the cassette is pressed too tightly against rear of paper. leave 1/8" gap between stopper and rear of paper. if that doesn't help, pull cassette out and locate gear on left side of cassette bay and make sure it is not dislodged.

good luck,

Printer Jam - when i put a sheet of Avery labels, printer jams

When you say TOP TRAY, do you mean a paper drawer, or the BYPASS TRAY? If the labels won't feed into the bypass but bond paper does, check to see if your labels are made for inkjet printers. Go to www.avery.com and contact Avery customer support to see what product they recommend for your MFC. Labels made for plain paper printers sometimes do not work for inkjets, and vice-a-versa.

RECURRING PAPER JAM - BROTHER MFC 5860 CN

I just bought the 5860 and have this issue right out of the gates. I discovered that the back lid causes the paper jam when using the bottom tray while examing with a flash light during a print job. I dislodged the back plate/lid (same lid you remove to pull paper jam out) out about 10mm and fastened the lid loosely to the back with a piece of tape on each side. The paper from the bottom tray does not slam against the back of the printer any more, thus more freedom of movement and no jams. Just successfully printed an 80 page document. You shouldn't have to do this with a new printer but I got it so cheap with all the rebates that I'm going to keep it and live with this fix. To sum up, the problem is a design flaw where the removable back plate is snapped in too tightly and contacts the bottom tray paper roller (& paper) during a print cycle. To fix you need to clear the path by pulling the back lid out slightly and taping each side with scotch tape to 'suspend'the back plate out about 10mm.a5999d3.jpg

Brother MFC - 7420: Paper will not feed!

Does it make the same sound if you feed the single sheet through the bypass with the paper drawer removed? I hate to say it, but your printer's paper feed mechanism may need replaced. Go to http://www.brother-usa.com/AskUs/default.aspx and ask Brother to diagnose this one; I think they'll confer with me and should be able to point you to a nearby Brother-authorized repair center. Let me know what happens!

Paper not feeding

Is this a top feed - that is paper loaded on top at the back bottom feed from a tray underneath? Top feed take one sheet of paper and gently push it down whilst the printer is trying to grab it. Tray feed - take tray out make sure no paper fragments are in the tracks and find a nail board and gently abrade the pick up rollers.
