Re: MY screen is extremely DIM, What Do I do???

Sounds like you need the backlight in your display panel replaced. Unless you know how to replace it yourself. You will need to take it into a repair shop. Quick check.. if you have a monitor plug it into the back of your laptop. Hit the fn + display key.. one the (f)function keys you will see a symbol resembling a monitor. If the display is good on the monitor. It's most definitely your backlight. Now in some cases the inverter may go bad so both have to be chacked. About the cost the backlight are not that expensive from $20 & up. The inverter is a little more between 38-70 bucks. Prices vary. But the replacement of either may be costly. Check around a few local shop and ask what the cost would be to replace the backlight and or the inverter for your model #. They will probably want to diagnose themselves to be sure that is the problem. Some shops give free diagnostics..then some do not. Also askif they determine it's definitely the backlight is youronly problem you can ask if you purchase the part(s) how much would they charge to put it in. If you can see the image on the screen with a flashlight then it's a problem with the inverter.

Aspire One screen has gone dim.

Inverter is inside the LCD Screen. Mostly at the bottom in the middle. To locate the Invertor, you have to take apart the LCD Screen by removing the LCD Frame, removing rubber pads & screws (depending upon the Model of notebook you have). Moreover, the cause of dim/ dark display could be the faulty lamp. So, I recommend that you check both the Inverter and Lamp.
Another likely cause is a bad connection of power from motherboard to the LCD. So first check the connectors/ wires for any damage before proceeding to replace Inverter of lamp.
For your convenience and idea about LCD Display, I have found a general link about CCFL replacement. Click here for detailed and graphical DIY instructions about LCD disassembly.
Make sure you take proper precaution while working inside LCD, as the inverter generates a very high voltage.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

The screen displays is dim because there is no backlight.
There are two parts responsible for lighting the display. First is the CCFL (Cold Cathode Florecent Lamp), which is the back light and the second is the Inverter board, which provides high voltage to the CCFL. Either of the parts can be faulty or in some rare cases both. But most likely it is the CCFL (Lamp). Its life is limited and depending upon how long it has been in use, you can have a better idea - if its the CCFL or Inverter.
Rest assure that your system is ok and you can check it by connecting you laptop with some external display, which would work fine.
So, my advice is that you get it properly checked by any professional for replacement of CCFL.

Hope this answers your question!

My screen has gone dim on my ibm thinkpad r50e, when trying to boot just kept goin in circles wouldnt load windows, so have restored factory defaults! but screen still dim? can you help please

if the screen is dim and the images still display it means that the it's probably the CCFL tube or the inverter (located in lcd panel) it will need to be replaced.

Dull laptop screen back light

You may have a faulty CCFL lamp. A faulty CCFL lamp may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering and/or with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp.
To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight or a faulty inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp. Usually the CCFL lamp fails before the inverter.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A55-S1063 the scrren is dim but I can still see using a flashlight. I have had the back light replaced once it worked great for about 2 weeks and then went back to being very...

Hello !

Since the screen is dim, the display's inverter board needs to be replaced.

If you were experiencing discoloration in the screen (pinkish lower light hues) before it failed, that would indicate a CCFL backlight issue. If the screen suddenly went dim on you rather than a slow degradation, the inverter would be indicated.

Hope this helps.

The screen is dim and "sun" key doesn't help

It is very possible that you are losing the screen. The backlight is built into the screen and the inverter is usually very reliable. I would however most likely change both the inverter and the screen.

LCD dim.

If you have replaced the screen and the inverter, about the only thing left is the flexible cable from the monitor to the video card. I take it that the Fn+F8 makes no difference?

Video problem

Generally this type of problem is the video card, however, it's extremely rare, but sometimes a screen malfunction will override the video out causing the appearance of a bad card. To check this, disconnect the screen, and try the external monitor. If the external works properly, then it's the screen.

Screen extremely dim

I think you should look at the sleep button on pin. When you close LCD it should push that pin down(Stanby or sleep pin).
When you press or it get stuck, this pin will block or not send voltage to inverter so that the light on monitor should go off or computer go to standy or sleep mode.Check this one.
best of luck,takecare
