I dropped one of my handsets and now it does not work at all. It gets a dial tone but no display. My husband took it apart and could not find anything broken. Any suggestions?
It is possible the display itself, or the logic connector from the LCD display to the chipset that drives it may have been damaged. Nearly all these type of devices are NOT user serviceable. The internal wiring and connections are so small that human fingers cannot manipulate them.
LCD displays are especially vulnerable to shock. I noticed on your Question to FixYa you stated that this is a cellular phone, but your description stated that it gets a dial tone. Cellular phones do not use dial tone. I am going to assume that you are referring to a cordless phone connected to your home land-line, but even if you are referring to a cellular phone, they share the same strengths and weaknesses.
The LCD display itself has numerous circuits, its not just one ore two wires. You can see this on older LCD's by the wide ribbon cable that was used to connect the display to the driving circuit board. Take apart an old calculator to see what I mean. Newer displays are actually soldered directly to the circuit board, with anywhere from 64 and 128 connections for small applications like a calculator, or a digital clock, to 512, 1024, 2048 or more connections for larger applications like TV screens. Generally, the more colors, features, and detail you have, the more internal connections you have, therefore the more fragile the device becomes.
Unfortunately, the display is the most expensive individual component on most devices, so most warranties, if covered, will replace the item instead of repairing it. Contact the manufacturer, your unit may be under warranty...
