Since you declined to specify the model of your answering machine, select it from the list at http://www.home-electronics.net/ge/pc/user-manuals.asp to get the manual.
Set rings to answer You can select the number of rings that will occur before the fax answers an incoming call. If you are using your machine as both a telephone and a fax machine, we suggest you set the ring count to at least 4 to give you time to answer. TIP: HP 1050 Fax: The Toll Saver function for the Digital Message Center interacts with Rings to Answer. See Toll Saver on page 40. If you have the HP 1050 Fax and have Toll Saver turned on, set the Rings to Answer to 2. 1. Press Menu repeatedly until BASIC FAX displays and press Start/Enter. Rings to Answer will display. 2. Press Start/Enter. 3. Enter the number of rings you want (2-7) and press Start/Enter. The HP Fax rings the set number of times and then answers. It then produces a different sounding ring to alert you to which type of call is incoming. • The additional ring may occur once for a fax call • The additional ring occurs 5 times for a voice call. After the 5 additional rings, the answering machine will answer.
Got it, and you can set it for 2, 4, or 6 rings on incoming calls.
1. Press MENU/CLOCK on the base to enter setup. 2. Press MENU/CLOCK repeatedly to select RING TIME. 3. Press VOL:/SELECT to set the number or rings at 2, 4, or 6. 4. Press SET to save the setting.

problem solved, grandkids used other phone with answering machine and left it in different mode "7" so it was picking up after 2 rings...thanks for answering my request.... solution solved... Thanks, Netta
the default setting is 5 rings. if you need to change that:
set the ring to answer to higher number, however, that will put the machine in manual answering of fax.
the better setting is to rest the phone or the answer machine to a lower number of rings.
Try reducing the number of rings on answer, it could be the sending machine is timing out from not getting answered soon enough. Try 3 rings, if that works, then try 4 rings...find out which one works best.
