Question about Canon PowerShot SD400 / IXUS 50 Digital Camera

Dropped my canon powershot sd400, now it won't work fine

My cannon sd400 fell from a chair while i was taking a photo of myself, it was working fine after but when i took another picture, i noticed the lcd was all black, then i tapped it a little while focusing on something then noticed an area i'm aiming the cam at, it seemed that the lens was misaligned or something is jamming or blocking the lens, i want to know if i can fix it myself before taking it to canon service for repair because they might charged me a great cost for it, thank you in advance!

Hi there, there is two possibilities. The first one is to check the lens barrier covers at the front of the lens are opening correctly. If the front cap is dented in any way it may prevent them from opening fully when switching the camera on. If this is the case, you may be able to manually assist the cover by gently pushing them open with something soft like a cotton tip. This wont fix the problem but may temporarily allow you to use the camera. The other possibility, is that the shutter assembly inside of the lens has been damaged. If you gently shake the camera you may be able to see something shifting across the image on the screen or even when looking through the front of the lens itself. If this is the case you would need to have a service centre replace the lens for you. The same applies for the front barrier however that repair would be much cheaper. Best of luck!

Was dropped. Now will do everything EXCEPT take photos. Lens, display, flash, etc. etc. all work fine. Just no screen image or photo when in "shoot" mode.

Sounds like the CCD or a stuck shutter blade. Try this place: www.CamerasAndParts.com They only service Canons and they are the only place we recommend for the Canons. It's all they work on and they are about half the price of most shops, plus the work is just excellent through them.

Canon Powershot SD400 won't upload pics to computer

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

CANON POWERSHOT SD400

The E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 50% of lens errors, but they're worth a try:

Beep signals should be mentioned in the manual, perhaps on the more comprehensive manual in the PDF file on the CD. Each set of beeps have a meaning. Check out the Canon tech support team.

Droped my camera

Either you take it to a repair shop and ask them if they think they could rig you with an improvised button, or you contact canon and ask them how much would it be to have a new button fitted in. I would first try to find out if the camera has recieved any more damage when it was dropped. it might not be worth to spend money on fixing just the button. Good luck
