Post XP SP2 install problems on eMachine laptop

Keep getting an "atisgkaf" error when trying to reboot after install of SP2 (attempting to format & reinstall OS on used laptop).
Have been doing some checking and noted references to possibly needing an updated driver for the ATI display. Went to the eMachine support website, downloaded & installed the newest driver available and still no go.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for any help & take care!
John

Yeah, but you may not care for it.

I, personally abhor the automated feature of Service Packs.
I would rather download Manually, and see what I'm getting.

Takes longer?

Sure.

Cramming junk down my throat that I don't want, don't need, and it is just filling good space I need on my harddrive?

Uh, no.

What to download, there's so much stuff, and I don't know what I'm looking at?
Just download the basics.

What?

Okay, download manually one at a time. When you can't boot your computer, Yep, that one has got to go.

Acer, (Excuse me, I mean eMachines), wants how MUCH?
You told them you could buy a better, used, computer, for that much.

Right?
(I know. I know. Be nice. There's always time to be bad. Lol!)

Lemme see. What could Acer have done for 150 bucks.
Motherboard? Ummm. Harddrive and new genuine copy of Windows XP? Ummmm.

Naa!

They were going to pick your computer apart, to see what the problem was.

You stated " I even tried not using the restore cd but a copy of XP again...."

Meaning a;
1) NEW genuine copy of Windows XP?
2) Genuine copy of Windows XP from another computer?
What are we talkin' about here?

I want to know what the original problem was? Why were you using the Restoration Disk in the first place?

Post back in a Comment.

W200 cause a blue screen

First of all: If you install SP2 you don't have to install SP1 over it. It already did. Secondly, don't install SP3, it destroys Windows XP.
Try reinsalling the PC with SP2, install the drivers and do nothing else, see if that helps.

If not, by all means post back here,
Yannick.

Windows xp service pack 2 - windows xp service pack 3

uninstall sp3,
take hdd to another machine,
recover the files and programes you want to save,
back them up on disk,ie,external drive or dvd data stores 4.7b gb per disk,
format start again and only load xp sp2.
Xp sp3 has bug fixes apparantly, lol
why fix some thing if its not broken I say.

C2881 wont boot after sp2 installed

Generally when an SP2 installation doesn't take it means that there was some corruption of the SP1 installation. Usually virus related.

Although it is possible, I doubt very highly that replacing hardware will fix this problem. This is a software related issue and should be repaired as such.

You'll need to boot to the XP recovery console and then perform an uninstallation of SP2. Then you'll need to disinfect the SP1 installation (check for winlogon infections!)

Please, do not attempt to physically replace the BIOS ROM. You'll probably brick your motherboard.

If this doesn't solve your errors or you need more information please post back with what BSoD you're getting when the computer starts. And if possible upload the .dmp file from C:\Windows\Minidump to a file hosting service.

Emachine sp2 prob

BIOS is unlikely to fail from a software fix such as SP2 but you may have too little ram or too slow of a processor to handle changes.
You may have to do a complete reinstallation of XP to set things right and then try the SP2 upgrade again.
Windows is unfortunately sometimes infuriatingly cranky and may require repeated installation before settling down.

Also, eMachines may have tweaked their version of XP in a way not compatible with SP2.
Check their website or MS Knowledge Base for clues.

Service Pack 2

Download a different sp2 pack it sounds corrupt, if that does not work I would suggest reloading windows. (Is it a legit copy?)
