The youtube link shows how to disassemble a Dell laptop. Although not specific to your model- the steps are still the same http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMo6_0mkEE8
Motherboard side of video cable, should be under the Switch Cover, (LED indicators, Power On button, speakers, etc), or under the Keyboard close to the Switch Cover.
Don't forget to remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery. (Use CARE. Wires going to Switch Cover. Do not cut them by accident, or pull on them when removing Switch Cover )
Have u tried replacing or trying a different power supply? Sometimes when a power supply is going bad will not put out the right voltage for the internal switch to kick up the brighter setting. Therefore it still thinks its on battery mode. Test the voltage from the supply and compare it to the recommended voltage gateway suggest for that laptop.
It sounds to me like the power switch is plugged into the motherboard incorrectly. I would need to know the type of motherboard you have to get you the proper schematic for hooking up the power switch and reset switch to the board. If you have the manual to the motherboard, there should be a detailed picture showing you how it is to be hooked up. Please let me know the motherboard model for further assistance.
Ezra,
It could be:
1. Dead battery due to faulty Charger. Check the voltage of the charger output. Replace if dead.
2. Dead battery NOT because of charger. You can check it by plugging into the wall socket. Replace if found dead.
3. Faulty power jack on the laptop. Replace it if battery is fine.
4. Faulty power on switch. Needs a replacement.
5. Fault ahead of the switch, then need a professional job.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Gateway machines are fitted with Bestec power supply's (dreadful things) and usually when the power supply goes it takes the mother board with it.
I live in an area prone to electrical storms and I probably get one Gateway machine a week into my workshop with exactly this problem.
