Snapper mower electric start problem

I have 8hp BS snapper mower. It will start manually but not with the electric start. I replaced the battery and still will not start. I notice below the gas tank under the engine, there is an unattached red wire. Where do I hook that wire to? Is that the problem why the mower does not start?

On most mowers, that red wire will connect to the battery. that could be your problem.
you didn't say if it is a rider or not, or how old it is.
Touch the wire to positive post on the battery, with the key off, remove quickly if it sparks.
if no spark, hold it to the battery while turning the key.
if the engine tries to start, connect it permanently.

I have an older snapper rear engine mower and it won't start unless the charger is connected. Once it starts, it will run for a while then dies.Hook the charger back up and it starts again. ????

Hi Troy:
I'd try removing and charging the battery, then leave it overnight and test it. The chances are that the battery needs to be replaced.
You could also take the battery to your local automotive parts supply store where they will test it for you, usually at no charge.
Cheers.

Does my 1979 johnson outboard charge the battery thru the powerpack?

Some models charged through a Magneto, but see if you can find the 1979 Year Manual. I have a 1979 engine myself in a 15Hp which is a Manual start(no battery) and I have a Sailhorse Johnson 8HP which has an electric port and is Manual start. I believe the 8HP would charge a battery as on a Sailboat the running lights needed power. The 8HP could power the lights directly.

Johnson offered options for electric start in lower HP units and options in charging systems to contain costs. You might get a better answer from someone by listing the HP of your motor. I was the original owner of the 15HP and remember the 9.9HP and others in the same Sales brochure. The Sales brochure may advertise more about the charging systems.

if there is then see if the starter is siezed, try turning the fly gear, but not just up against the flywheel but try turning the starter backwards to see if it moves

Snapper Hi-Vac riding mower that won't start with starter

You may need a 300cca battery, an ignition switch or a solenoid to get things going again. I also would check to make sure the starter gear has not locked in the flywheel teeth; it will burn up the starter. You should be able to go to the snapper website and put your model of mower in and find the parts and diagrams you need.
Good Day.

Lawn mower will not stay cranked unless you keep pouring gas into

common problems to all older lawnmower, lots of dirt and dust the mower goes through and ages. I would first start by taking the carb apart and clean the filter with soap and water, allow it to air dry. also carburetor prob need rebuilding or replacing. Pick up some Carburetor cleaner at any auto part store and spay it down the carb, dont be afraid to spray allot in there and let it dry for 1/2 and hours. carb tend wear and parts need replacing just like any engines. 99% of the time lawn mower carb goes out before the engine will and common problems with all lawn mower. If you not mechanical incline or dont want to rebuilt it, just buy the whole new carb and replace it, fairly cheap easy to replace and will last you another 10 + years or more. www.briggsandstratton.com
