remove the paper tray under the printer and then remove the metal plate they is a rod that guides the paper ensure that the spring for that rod is in place and allign that rode that should get you going. Easy hey .i checked the back of my printer and it took me a day to figure it out, it was only when i took it apart and check every component when i realized the importance or this piece of plastic rod on a spring..

Ok try this It is not the back cover but the black guide inside the back cover. Looking from the back of the machine you will see a black guide plate that moves back and forward as you close the back cover now on the right hand side there is a lever that when closed(the guide)will go through an optical sensor to tell m/c its closed.Make sure the lever is still there and going through the sensor. Hope this helps Steveo

Open the back cover and then press black plastic inner chute by pressing the release tab located on the right side of the chute. Sometimes paper is jammed inside the inner chute and you can not see it. If you find paper wrapped around the orange roller do not try to remove it. You will want to check with Brother and find out if the unit is in warranty. If you do not find paper and the back cover message is still displayed you will want to check with Brother about you warranty options. They generally cover this issue for about 15 months.

On my machine, the lever assembly that trips the optical sensor had moved laterally to the left (when viewing the machine from the back), preventing it from tripping the sensor when everything was closed. I had to release the black guide plate (there is a light grey tab on the right end keeping it from dropping down fully that will need to be released to allow the guide plate to drop down. Then you will see the lever assembly now on top of the plate that is used to trip the sensor. This assembly has a lever on the left end as well at roughly the center of the machine. Along the rod that connects the levers together, there is a third lever that should be down in a slot in the black guide plate. On my machine, this lever was not in the slot, but to its left. Once I moved this lever into the slot, the whole assembly was oriented laterally in the correct manner, and once the guide plate was replaced and the back cover closed, the error message disappeared.
