I need a chain for a 21speed mountain bike it is an older mongoose MGX i dont know what kind or size chain i need can you plz help me out???

Look around for a 7-speed chain. Special tools are involved for 'cutting' it to size so why not just establish a relationship with your Local Bike Shop now?

If it's really worn you'll probably also need to replace the cogs and possibly the chainrings. Old drive train parts don't mesh well with new ones.

How to install a shimano hg 40 chain on your 12 speed mongoose bike?

The first thing you need to do any chain work is a chain toolchriscanhelp.jpg
This allows you to push a pin out to break the chain and then push the pin back in to lock it and then release the pin to allow the chain to bend. One of these is a must for any rider, cheao and could save your ride if a derailleur breaks or something.

Chain placement on Next 21 gear mountain Bike

You haven't actually asked a question, so I am guessing that you want to know how to replace a bicycle chain on a 21 speed bike. To remove the chain you need to use a chain tool that presses one of the pins out of the one of the chain links (any link, there is no master link). To put the new chain on you use the chain tool to press the pin in. This is just a little tricky with a chain tool, but it's just about impossible without it. They sell these tools at bike shops and maybe even at Wal-mart. Take a look at this link to see a what I'm talking about. http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/chain-installation-derailleur-bikes By the way, Park tools are very good quality for the money.

Have a mongoose with single rear derailleur - how does the shift work?

You have a 21 spd and you have two derailleurs, one front and one rear. To shift you must always be pedalling forward, not backwards or you can chip teeth on your chainrings and cog. To shift, remember left hand controls front, brake and derailleur, the front derailleur is what gives you the ranges, gears closest to the bike are the easiest, so, small ring it the front are your easiest range, middle, mid range, large hardest but fastest. It is best to remember that it is the number of teeth that are hitting the chain to give you the speed you want. Rear Derailleur is your fine tuner the largest is the easiest, same as above. NOW DO NOT KITTY CORNER YOUR CHAIN, SUCH AS LARGE COG IN REAR TO LARGE IN FRONT CHAIN WHEEL, AND DO NOT USE SMALL IN REAR TO SMALL IN FRONT CHAINWHEEL. The reason you do not do that is: you can stretch your chain, yes you can stretch your chain and it serves no purpose, if you are pedalling to easy change your range(front). I hope this helps you understand how to shift now. You may contact me for any further questions, I have been in business for 38+ years
